Bloodborne is one of the greatest video games ever made and is considered by many to be the best exclusive on the PlayStation 4 due to its amazing lore and fast-paced combat. The game was a massive departure from the Souls series that everyone was familiar with, even though it retained some of its mechanics.

The Lovecraftian world of Bloodborne is a joy to explore, and having to fight the many nightmarish creatures in the game can be an experience that is both utterly terrifying yet quite memorable indeed. This is especially true with some of the bosses in this game, although some of them are way nobler and morally conflicted than what initially meets the eye. The most notable examples in this regard are mentioned below.

5 Father Gascoigne

Father Gascoigne Bloodborne

Calling Father Gascoigne 'noble' would be stretching the definition of this work quite a bit. After all, this character is responsible for the death of his own and forcing his own daughters to an early grave... although the latter is dependent on the player's actions as well. However, to write off Gascoigne's intentions based on what the player sees at first glance would be a rather rash judgment indeed.

After all, this man was good enough to start a family of his own, with his wife loving him so much that she always tried to bring him back whenever he succumbed to the bloodlust. In a way, the hunt itself is to blame for corrupting the minds of pure-hearted individuals and setting them on the path to becoming beasts, with Father Gascoigne being a great example of the same.

4 Gehrman, The First Hunter

Bloodborne Gehrman first hunter

Gehrman is another hunter who's more like the product of his circumstances rather than anything else. He's one of the first Hunters who joined in the hunt and has been paying for it ever since. He might seem like a character who is fine with guiding others in the dream, but the truth is that he hates his existence and wishes for this unending nightmare to be over.

It's something that he pleads with Master Willem and Laurence for in a rather interesting hidden piece of dialogue in the game. Even the fight against him is a blast, with the flowery field serving as a great arena for a duel that can potentially be the last fight in the game... unless players manage to unlock the alternate ending by consuming the three umbilical cords in the game, that is.

3 Martyr Logarius

Martyr Logarius in Bloodborne

The title 'Martyr' should be proof enough of just how noble and tough Logarius' goal really is. As the leader of the Executioners, Logarius was on a warpath to rid the world of the accursed Vilebloods that tormented the land... or so they thought, at least. Before the events of the game, Logarius actually managed to hunt down the Queen of the Vilebloods, Annalise. However, he realized that she was immortal — a fact that would throw all the Executioners into disarray if they became aware of this fact.

So, in a bid to protect his clan, Logarius decided to wear the Crown of Illusions and hide away the true nature of Annalise's immortality. This fact becomes all the more saddening when players give the Unopened Cainhurst Summons to Alfred, who goes on a quest of his own to defeat Annalise before killing himself... only for all of this to be rendered meaningless since Annalise comes back from the dead soon enough.

2 Lady Maria Of The Astral Clocktower

Lady Maria of the Astral Clocktower The Old Hunters DLC Bloodborne

Lady Maria is one of the best bosses in Bloodborne history, serving as another sweet encounter in the amazing Old Hunters DLC. This character is quite powerful and will beat players down if they aren't prudent with their dodges. Making the most of the attack windows provided by this boss is key to securing victory against one of Bloodborne's hardest bosses.

Lady Maria's story is pretty fascinating as well, studying under Gehrman before overseeing the twisted happenings in the Fishing Hamlet. It was clear that the atrocities committed against Kos had scarred Lady Maria for good, and the battle against her showed that she was still pretty noble in her fighting style despite being a part of such a dark event where a Great One was defiled for selfish reasons.

1 Ludwig The Accursed/Holy Blade

Ludwig The Accursed from Bloodborne

It would be impossible to talk about the best bosses in Bloodborne without mentioning Ludwig, the first boss of the DLC who is incredibly tough to defeat. However, this battle is worth it simply for the transitory cutscene where Ludwig transforms from a mindless beast into a noble knight who manages to harness the power of his Holy Moonlight Sword to completely change how the fight plays out.

It also shows that his intentions were not bad in the slightest while leading his group of Church Hunters. If the player talks to the severed head of Ludwig after the fight while wearing any Church attire, then Ludwig will actually ask them if the hunters under his care grew into the bastions of justice that he wanted them to be all along. The player can either lie and say yes or tell him the truth about how the Church has fallen since its heyday, which shows that Ludwig's craziness was mainly because he succumbed to the bloodlust of the Hunt.

Bloodborne is available on PlayStation 4.
