At the start of Bleach, fans are introduced to Inoue Orihime, a quirky girl often used for comic relief. But behind her eccentric food taste and fan service, lies a heartfelt and realistic character. Orihime is burdened with trauma and an inferiority complex, often doing her best to try and support her friends and be useful, frequently sacrificing her safety for that goal. Orihime is a gateway into realism, a look into a deeply troubled and insecure real girl who struggles to cope with her circumstances.

While Orihime is often disregarded as useless or annoying by some fans. Similar to characters like Ichigo or Kisuke, Orihime provides a different take on an established trope; a damsel who actively tries her best to be better while the world crashes around her. Here's a closer look at Orihime's evolution across Bleach and its major arcs.

Bleach: Why Ichigo Stands Out From Other Protagonists

Contrary to some criticism, Ichigo Kurosaki stands out as one of the best-written protagonists in Shonen. What makes him so special?

Rising from Trauma

Orihime wishes for Ichigo not to get hurt anymore in the Bleach anime

Orihime grew up in a troubled household. In the original manga, it is implied that Orihime's parents abused her, and her only comfort was her older brother, Sora. After their parents passed away, Sora became Orihime's guardian, raising her with love and care. Sora dedicated himself to taking care of his little sister, but in a tragic accident, he passed away in front of a young Orihime. On a fated day, Orihime carried her agonizing brother on her back to the Kurosaki clinic, where a young Ichigo and his father, Isshin, tried to save Sora, with no success.

Shortly after, Orihime became very close friends with Arisawa Tatsuki. The two became like sisters, giving Orihime the company and comfort she needed. Sometime after Ichigo received Soul Reaper powers, the late Sora became a Hollow, viciously attacking Orihime. The girl confronts her brother, letting him finally rest with the help of Ichigo and Rukia. From a very young age, Orihime has known constant pain, but she was always supported by her loved ones, which formed the trait of always supporting them back that Orihime developed. Orihime developed a desire to always ease others of her pain just as they did hers. Knowing true suffering, she seeks to save others from it, which will soon manifest itself into a real ability.
