FromSoftware created an entire genre thanks to games like Dark Souls. While its brand continues to thrive thanks to upcoming titles like a remake of Demon's Souls on PlayStation 5, lots of independent studios have tried their hands at Souls-like games. One such developer is The Game Kitchen, whose 2019 pixel-art Metroidvania Blasphemous will get DLC on August 4.

Blasphemous follows a character called The Penitent One through a "nightmarish world of twisted religion" as they seek to escape eternal damnation while the land of Cvstodia is ravaged by a curse. Announced during Double Fine's Day of the Devs showcase, an extension of Geoff Keighley's Summer Game Fest that revealed the Bugsnax theme song today, "The Stir of Dawn" DLC will add new areas and story content, a New Game Plus mode, and permanent character modifiers called Penitences.

The new DLC will be free on PC and console editions of the game according to publisher Team17, who re-uploaded the trailer to YouTube following its reveal. Reviews of Blasphemous have commented on its over-the-top dark nature with horrific and beautiful pixel art, held back mostly by its difficult platforming, so adding a New Game Plus mode should provide a whole extra layer of difficulty.

While the difficulty is a hallmark of Souls-like games such as Blasphemous, some have taken to challenging themselves by playing with as many restrictions as possible. For example, recently a streamer beat Dark Souls 3 using a dance pad.

Blasphemous is available now on PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
