Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is already breaking franchise records less than a week after release. In fact, it broke a major record on its first day. According to Activision, Black Ops 4 broke the publisher's record for day one digital sales. More players purchased Black Ops 4 digitally through its first day of release than have purchased any previous game in the Call of Duty franchise, any Destiny release, any Skylanders or Cabela's.

Activision continued by confirming that Black Ops 4's day one digital sales broke the publisher's records across all major platforms, too. The record wasn't a product of Black Ops 4 being made available via Battle.net or a surge in Xbox One support. No, Black Ops 4 broke the digital day one sales record on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC individually, as well as the overall record. Though Activision did confirm that PC day one digital sales more than doubled last year's numbers.

The final statistic that Activision provided was that Black Ops 4's day one online player count increased over Call of Duty: WW2's, which itself had overperformed compared to Infinite Warfare.  This is an interesting statistic in that it may not be as interesting as it first seems. After all, Black Ops 4 has no offline component, whereas plenty of Call of Duty: WW2's players could have remained offline to play single player. However, you can count on this being a very significant statistic from Activision's perspective. More online players means better engagement, means more likely purchases of Black Ops 4's Season Pass and post-launch content.

Still, it's telling that Activision noted that player count only increased year-to-year. If Black Ops 4 had set a day one record for online players for the franchise then the publisher would have said so. That likely implies that while Black Ops 4 is performing well, it's still unlikely to surpass the Call of Duty franchise's top performers such as Modern Warfare 3. But again, if Black Ops 4 can continue to engage players online like it's doing right now then Activision is probably more than happy.

The least that can be taken away from Activision's announcement today is that digital sales continue to soar, likely at the direct expense of physical sales. An all-multiplayer game likely only compounds on that trend.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
