The long-in-development Black Myth: Wukong has shown off another trailer, one that cements its previously reported August release date. Way back in 2020, Chinese developer Game Science released a 13-minute pre-alpha gameplay video for what would become Black Myth: Wukong, an action RPG inspired by the classic 16th-century Chinese epic, Journey to the West. Over the years, even more of the game was revealed in trailers, highlighting Black Myth’s impressive Unreal Engine 5 graphics and blistering Soulslike combat.

Black Myth: Wukong puts players in the role of a monkey-like warrior inspired by Sun Wukong, the Monkey King of Chinese folklore. This unlikely hero will travel the land, battling frightening monsters using a trusty bo staff, mystical powers, and fluid martial arts. Black Myth's Son Wukong-inspired protagonist can also transform into insects and other creatures to help in combat or reach otherwise inaccessible parts of the open world. This promising gameplay was most recently shown at The Game Awards 2023 back in December, where Black Myth’s release date was officially announced as August 20, 2024.

Black Myth: Wukong Might Give FromSoftware Competition in One Big Area

Black Myth: Wukong, the upcoming Soulslike set in Ancient China, could give FromSoftware a run for its money in one crucial area.

This release date was reinforced in a new Black Myth: Wukong trailer, which was shown at the recent WeGame 2024 showcase. The trailer itself shows more of Black Myth’s enemy creatures, diverse landscapes, and magic-infused combat, all while the monkey warrior discovers a golden crown seemingly pulled from Journey to the West. In the original tale, Sun Wukong wore this crown as a punishment for killing six thieves after being freed from his five hundred-year-long imprisonment, but it isn’t clear what purpose the headband serves in Black Myth: Wukong’s take on the novel’s story.

Black Myth: Wukong Release Date

  • August 20, 2024

Before Black Myth: Wukong, developer Game Science found success with mobile games like 100 Heroes and Red Tides. Black Myth marks the studio’s first console release, and it has already drawn up interest from fans of From Software’s Soulslike games and Dragon Ball – especially since the latter was inspired by Journey to the West just like Black Myth. Many also see Black Myth as a potential entry point into Chinese mythology alongside other recent Eastern-themed titles like Faith of Danschant: Hereafter.

Black Myth: Wukong already looks like an exciting and visually rich experience for the first console effort from a studio known mostly for mobile releases, with its 4K-rendered landscapes and horrific monster designs. Players won’t have to wait too much longer to challenge these fearsome beasts as the Destined One, as Black Myth: Wukong is set to launch on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Windows PCs on August 20.
