Back in August 2017, a new game popped up on the radar for many gamers, and that title is Biomutant. When it was announced, the game was in the very early stages of development by Swedish video game studio Experiment 101, which was later acquired by a larger group known as THQ Nordic. Ever since then, the game has been in development, and just recently more footage started appearing and the game was finally given a release date of May 25, 2021.

Biomutant is a very ambitious new IP, and it combines tons of cool features from popular games and different genres into one big radiation-ridden cauldron, with the end result being a fantastic action RPG. The sandbox for Biomutant is huge, and this open-world RPG is filled with mutant furry creatures sporting mechanical limbs, toothbrush swords, bio-contamination weapons held together by loose bolts, multiple gadgets that unlock flight or other abilities, among other equipment. Gameplay involves clan wars with karma points and establishing allegiances. If there's anything Biomutant succeeds at delivering, its the premise.

The Combat and NPCs In Biomutant, And Why They Matter

Biomutant comes with a very unique combat system that is quite reminiscent of games like DarkSouls, Devil May Cry, MonsterHunter, the NieR franchise, and more. Players will be able to choose from a selection of melee weapons and guns to use against foes, with the addition of mutations and abilities that can spice things up. THQ Nordic promises that players will be able to seamlessly change their weapons in the middle of the combat, while also creating convoluted combos and adapting the fighting style based on the enemies and what they do.

Throughout the world of Biomutant, which reportedly is as big as the one from Grand Theft Auto 4, players will be able to find several NPCs who can craft items and equipment. This also seems to apply to learning new skills, special combos, or peculiar attacks. This means that players will always be able to improve their repertoire constantly and create new gear and weapons to match their newfound abilities. The reason why these things matter lies in the complex and deep crafting system for weapons in Biomutant.

Biomutant's Innovative Crafting System For Weapons

In Biomutant, players will find workbenches in the main settlements and other encampments. These are used to craft weapons, using all sorts of materials and parts players will retrieve from the world, the dead zones, bunkers, ruins, and other places. Weapons in Biomutant are a major element, and they can be wielded with either one or two hands, depending on their size.

Crafting comes in the form of melee and projectile-based weapons, with the former being divided into three main categories, and the latter following the same principle. Melee weapons can be slicing, piercing, or crushing, and their damage, speed, size, and more varies based on the type. Firearms include shotguns, rifles, and revolvers or sidearms.

Weapons are crafted by putting together different pieces and using a number of materials, and the end result is often unique and very rewarding for capable tinkerers. The materials found in Biomutant are Ceramic, Plastic, Rubber, Metal, Wood, and Meteor. Furthermore, weapons can be modified with specific parts, like handles for melee weapons, or bio-contamination vials for ranged weapons, inflicting detrimental effects on enemies hit, poisoning them for damage over time.

This allows players to craft swords that in truth are plastic toothbrushes with metal handles, held together by rubbers, or maybe hybrid guns made of both ceramic and wood, shooting radioactive bullets. The possibilities are almost endless here, and other modifications include chainsaw modules and battery power.

Much like characters do, weapons in Biomutant also come with stats that improve or change the way they are used in battle, including classic perks like Damage, Fire Rate, Attack Speed, Armor Piercing, Range, and more. Weapons also seem to have a Durability attribute, which can be similar to how survival games treat them, providing weapons with hit points or something of the sort, and deteriorating over time. Overall, the only limit seems to be the players' creativity, provided they have enough materials and scrap components, allows for a deep customization system that is rarely seen in modern games.

Biomutant releases May 25, 2021, for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
