Biomutant, the much-awaited open-world title from THQ Nordic and Experiment 101, turned heads with its first reveal back in 2017. This post-apocalyptic RPG got fans even more excited with the new gameplay trailer that it revealed back in March, as this trailer was the first update fans had had about the game since January. It showcased two of the most exciting aspects of the game: the combat mechanics and the feature of genetic modification. These two might just go on to be some of the biggest selling points when Biomutant releases on May 25.

At the core of the genetic modification in Biomutant is the concept of breeds. The game offers players six basic genetic structures to the players to choose from, which determine the way a character looks, as well as their strengths and weaknesses. Now, these statistics are unique to each breed, and upon choosing one, players can modify the character by making changes to its genetic structure. Furthermore, these mutations will aid the players during battle, as each genetic structure will feature different areas of strength.

Biomutant Has Many Options to Choose from in Terms of Breeds

Biomutant offers six breeds to choose from, namely Primal, Dumdon, Rex, Hyla, Fip, and Murgel. The choice further affects the gameplay style adapted by the players, as while the choice resides on the player, the chosen breed can further mutate as the game moves on. This makes the game stand out in the roster of RPG titles out there. The title took the concept of customization one step further than even games like Cyberpunk 2077.

First off is the Primal, which is an extremely fast anthropomorphic breed. Its agility makes it suitable for more stealth-oriented gameplay. As a result, Primals pair best with the classes Dead-Eye and Saboteur. As is evident from the name, the Dead-Eye class is basically a sniper, while the Saboteur is suitable both for striking from the shadows as well as a close-quarter battle. However, there is a tradeoff to using Primal. This breed has an underdeveloped intellect, which can get in the way while playing as a Saboteur. Overall, Primals are pretty average in terms of power and health.

Next up is the Dumdon. If a player is looking for a character build that focuses mainly on melee fights, this one is the obvious choice. The Dumdon boasts the highest melee damage among all the breeds prior to further mutation. This makes it a suitable choice for both the Saboteur and the Sentinel classes in BiomutantHowever, Dumdons are pretty average in terms of health and have a slower rate of energy regeneration.

Moving on to the Fip, this one is the epitome of balance. On one hand, Fips possess the highest power, the fastest rate of energy regeneration, and the highest Ki energy among all the breeds. On the other hand, this breed is pretty fragile in terms of health and armor. Furthermore, this breed deals low melee damage, but the high Ki energy and faster energy regeneration stats make it ideal for the Psi-Freak class.

The Hyla is best suited for the position of a tank. Its high armor count and slight armor boost make it akin to a wall, making them perfect for the task of holding the fort and overall defensive gameplay. However, they can be pretty handy as aids in a fight as well, and this breed pairs best with the classes Sentinel and Commando.

The Murgel is pretty average in terms of all the attributes, be it health, Ki Energy, Energy regeneration rate, or armor. This makes it a safe choice for players who would like to create their own Biomutant character from scratch. However, the only redeeming quality this breed features is its efficiency in trading situations. Furthermore, this breed also offers a slight boost to the chances of finding loot in the game.

The Rex is perhaps the safest choice to start off the game with. With above-average stats in terms of power, Ki Energy, and Energy Regeneration, the most notable attribute of this breed is its health. However, as a tradeoff to its high health count, this breed deals low melee damage, but players can always fix it using Biomutant's weapon customizations. Overall, the Rex is basically a starter pack. Players can pair it with any of the available classes as they gradually get the hang of the game.

Biomutant releases on PC, PS4, and Xbox One on May 25.
