Highlights

  • Takeaway 1: Wild West And Wizards is a low-budget RPG with an open-world and looter-shooter gameplay, but it also includes a magic system. It's a simple and easy-to-play RPG that may appeal to players on a budget.
  • Takeaway 2: Don't Die In The West is a frontier life-sim RPG with base-building and crafting elements. It has a low-stakes atmosphere and is suitable for fans of slowly building and exploring.
  • Takeaway 3: Weird West is an action-RPG set in an alternate Wild West with fantastical creatures. It offers immersive-sim aspects and action-packed gameplay with stealth elements, although its RPG systems are not the most in-depth.

The Wild West is arguably one of the most evocative and iconic settings in film and games alike, and many video games have used its tropes and cliches to great effect. Red Dead Redemption and its revered sequel managed to capture the essence of the West with great skill, but although those games contain elements of RPGs, they're more focused on action and adventure.

For RPG fans, there's not much in the way of well-made games set in some variety of the Wild West. This discussion aims to provide a broad and varied selection of Western-themed games with solid RPG systems that should hopefully scratch that Wild West itch.

Make no mistake, there's still a solid game underneath West Of Loathing's comedy, but players will find it hard to enjoy themselves if the game's writing grates on them.
