A wedding can be one of the most terrifying events that someone can go through in their lifetime. People have to worry about their partner being “the one” on top of organizing a giant event and hoping nothing will go wrong. It’s also a magical time in someone’s life. To liken it to Dark Souls, weddings have a risk-reward system that is a tempting challenge to take on.
Video games have typically shied away from capturing these giant moments. However, there are some examples of video games with weddings attached to them. Many of them are critical to the stories and make these classics even more memorable for those who play through the games.
7 Catherine
Catherine was a side project from the Persona team about a man named Vincent who was caught in a love crossroads. Should he stick with his current girlfriend Katherine or snuggle up to the mysterious new blonde Catherine? The modern remake added another choice to the mix in the form of Rin.
Players have to solve block puzzles in their literal dreams and make dialogue choices that will affect the many endings. The true ending shows Katherine and Vincent getting happily married as their friends and family cheer them on. It’s a lengthy end cutscene that made the nightmarish puzzles worth it including one wherein a giant baby will chase the player.
6 Chrono Trigger
Chrono Trigger did not originally have a wedding in it when the classic RPG premiered on the SNES. The PS1 version added many things to the game including animated cutscenes. The load times were not good, but they were worth going through to see these slick animations.
One of the coolest is when Frog cuts open the mountain path with his newly reforged Masamune. Another example is in the end credits wherein Crono and Marle get happily married. It’s a divergence from the original material and isn’t technically in the game proper, but it’s still an unforgettable scene.
5 Dragon Quest 5: Hand Of The Heavenly Bride
A wedding is practically in the title for Dragon Quest 5: Hand of the Heavenly Bride. This was one of the most ambitious RPGs of the SNES era, taking place over the lifetime of the main hero. He goes from a boy to a man and players must choose one of two female characters to be his wife. Should players wed the rich girl Nera or should they go after their childhood friend Bianca?
The DS version added a third girl, Debora, but she was kind of a joke pick because of how mean she was to the main character. The wedding isn’t a huge event in the game in terms of spectacles as it was only 16-bit. Still, the overall theme still makes it one of the most memorable entries in the Dragon Quest series.
4 Final Fantasy 10
Final Fantasy 10 is a Square Enix RPG that does bring the spectacle and more with its wedding scene when compared to Dragon Quest 5. Seymour is one of the main villains of the game who eventually proposes to the female lead, Yuna. She goes along with it to bring peace to Spira even though she loves the male lead character, Tidus.
Tidus loves her back and decides to rescue Yuna during the wedding ceremony. Tidus and friends arrive by airship, hooking onto the wedding platform with chains. They then proceed to slide down it and crash the wedding. It’s one of the coolest cutscenes in the game, if not the entire Final Fantasy series.
3 Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns Of The Patriots
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is a great entry in the series that unfortunately remains trapped on the PS3. It never got a remaster or proper port which is a shame for Solid Snake’s final adventure. It ties up a lot of loose plot threads and even ends with a marriage ceremony between Johnny Sasaki and Meryl Silverburgh.
Of all the wild things that happen in that game, including a fistfight above an actual Metal Gear, their marriage might be the strangest thing. Not even the diehard fans of the Metal Gear series could have predicted that happening as it was assumed Snake would eventually end up with Meryl.
2 Red Dead Redemption 2
Red Dead Redemption 2 was a prequel that focused on Arthur Morgan. Most of the game follows his exploits in Dutch’s gang with the protagonist of the first game, John Marston, being a background character. Eventually, Arthur dies but not before he helps John to escape this life of crime.
The epilogue of the game follows John as he tries to become a good man for his girlfriend and son. Eventually, John is able to buy and build a home and decides to propose to his girlfriend as well to make his family a proper one. It’s a bittersweet moment in the Red Dead series since fans know what is to become of John by the end of the first game.
1 Super Mario Odyssey
Super Mario Odyssey’s whole theme is based around a wedding. Bowser wants to marry Peach and steals her away from Mario yet again. The finale takes place in a wedding chapel before diving into the usual lava battlefield that most Mario adventures end with.
One of the funniest moments in the whole game is when Mario pats Bowser on the back after being rejected by Peach. Even though they are enemies, Mario still has a kind heart to offer him. As for Bowser, all he wants is love and there’s nothing wrong with that; apart from the whole kidnapping thing, of course.
