Released exclusively in Japan a year after the first Survival Kids game, Survival Kids 2 plays much like the first. A group of children, searching for treasure, must escape the Twin Islands and their pursuers, all the while searching for food, water, and materials with which to craft items. Players will need to keep track of the various health meters to stay alive, from hunger to thirst, fatigue, and of course, health.

Survival Kids 2 offered players not only multiple endings to the game, but also multiple openings. This greatly increased the replayability of the game and made it a cult classic. The Survival Kids series would continue with the Lost in Blue games, released on Nintendo DS.

While many survival games are set in remote locations where characters are often stranded, Disaster Report is set around an artificial island that is slowly collapsing. It follows a reporter who must not only survive the disaster, but find out the reason why it is happening in the first place.

Performing strenuous tasks will deplete this meter which, if not refilled, will eventually deplete the character's health. QP can be restored by drinking clean water from various sources. Disaster Report blends the action of a disaster movie with the mechanics of a survival game, creating the first in a long-running series of games.

This cult survival RPG is set in a remote town suffering from a deadly illness known as the Sand Plague. The game revolves around the player attempting to discover the source of the illness and save the town. Players can initially choose between two playable characters and a third after completing the game once.

Each character receives a different set of missions that are carried out over the 12 in-game days. Time does not wait for these missions though, as the days continue to progress regardless of if a mission is completed or not. Players are also tasked with the survival of a group of NPCs called The Bound. Pathologic blends RPG and survival mechanics, such as hunger and stamina meters, with a haunting and bleak atmosphere. The game was a critical hit in its native Russia and won several awards, and later received a sequel in Pathologic 2.

Not every year produces classics in the world of video games. Developed for the Wii, Lost in Blue: Shipwrecked is the most recent entry into the Lost in Blue series, and probably its last. Disaster Report 3, also known as The Desperate City 3, is an action survival game set around a devastating earthquake. Players can choose between either a young boy or girl as their character, with each option offering slightly different stats. Unlike previous games, the thirst meter has been replaced by a stress meter, which can be affected by different events or conversations with NPCs.

Damage is taken from environmental dangers, such as fire, but health can be replenished with medicine and food. While this series of games has never made waves internationally, Disaster Report 3 was followed by a long-awaited sequel in 2018, keeping the series going to this day.
