Ubisoft announced a new Star Wars game during the Xbox Games Showcase in June 2023. Titled Star Wars Outlaws, the open-world RPG follows a new character in the Star Wars franchise: a smuggler called Kay Vess. She’s quickly become one of the galaxy’s most wanted, alongside her Merqaal companion, Nix, as they decide to take on one of the biggest heists in the Outer Rim Territories.

Developed by Ubisoft, the gameplay reveal trailer for Star Wars Outlaws has fans excited for an open-world adventure in the galaxy far, far away. Set for release sometime in 2024, now’s the perfect time to brush up on the lore and character of the Star Wars universe, and there are plenty of games to enjoy in the meantime.

6 Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order

Before Outlaws, there was Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. Developed by Respawn Entertainment, the single-player narrative kickstarted the resurgence of single-player Star Wars games in the franchise, introducing a brand-new character for fans and players to vibe with. Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order takes place five years after the events of Revenge of the Sith, and follows Jedi Padawan Cal Kestis as he unwittingly becomes Darth Vader's prey, and a target of the Galactic Empire after spending years in hiding. As Cal still needs to complete his Jedi training, players are encouraged to finish this quest by mastering new gameplay mechanics and re-learning the Force.

Fallen Order follows a linear gameplay structure, with players locked to visiting five planets across the universe. Cal meets various new and returning characters along the way, including BD-1 and Nightsister Merrin, in addition to formidable members of the Sith.

5 Bounty Hunter

Way back when fan-favorite bounty hunter Jango Fett had his own video game. Released in 2002, Star Wars: Bounty Hunter gave fans a deeper look into Jango’s backstory before his introduction in Attack of the Clones. It also continues his story from the comic Jango Fett: Open Seasons by Haden Blackman.

While Star Wars: Bounty Hunter is a little dated, the gameplay is entertaining enough to keep players involved in the story, like learning how Jango came to pilot his iconic Firespray ship and utilizing his many skills to get the job done. In the game, Sith Lord Darth Tyranus contracts Jango to kill Dark Jedi Komari Vosa while dealing with various crime syndicates.

4 The Old Republic

Debuting in 2011, Star Wars: The Old Republic is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) still active today. Star Wars: The Old Republic regularly receives updates. The game is set 3,600 years before the Star Wars Prequels, during an ongoing war between the Galactic Republic and the Sith Empire.

The Old Republic differs from other Star Wars games in that players create their persona rather than a pre-established character. These can be based on any species, including humans, cyborgs, Twi’lek, and Rattataki, in addition to being a Jedi, Sith Pureblood, Bounty Hunter, or even a Smuggler. The Old Republic may offer players a live-service Star Wars experience that will provide them with years of entertainment.

3 Star Wars Jedi: Survivor

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is the latest game in the franchise’s video game canon and is a direct sequel to Fallen Order. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor takes place five years after the first game, and involves Cal regrouping with his old crew to take on a new adventure in the galaxy, which involves finding a long-forgotten place of vast importance to the Jedi.

The game is still locked to specific planets (six, in this case), but Koboh gives players a little taste of what an open-world Star Wars game like Outlaws may be like. Players will spend most of their time on Koboh, as the planet can only be fully explored once Cal has progressed in the skills necessary to unlock certain areas. Even though Jedi Survivor and Outlaws are made by different developers, it acts as the perfect bridge for players as they are introduced to Kay Vess in 2024.

2 Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga

There have been dozens of video game adaptations of the Skywalker Saga, but some can be hard to find (particularly based on the original trilogy). One way to refresh players’ memories by experiencing the films in brick-filled chunks is by playing Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, which is filled with fun references across the Star Wars franchise. The game covers the movies from The Phantom Menace through to The Rise of Skywalker.

The Lego Star Wars games have always been an excellent gateway for fans of new and old, combining typical Lego humor with fan service and dedication to the films. If players haven’t watched The Skywalker Saga for a while, this game is a must-play to learn some of the lore of the galaxy in preparation for Outlaws.

1 Battlefront 2

Darth Maul Star Wars Battlefront 2

Star Wars: Battlefront 2 is the fourth mainline installment of the Battlefront franchise and is a sequel to the 2015 reboot. Battlefront II faced major controversies following its release due to its use of microtransactions and loot boxes. However, it has since become a great game to play to familiarize players with the lore of the franchise, its characters, and what to expect from Star Wars-based gameplay, a true love letter to Star Wars with its Prequel, Original, and Sequel era content.

Although the game does not receive support, including a lack of new content, players can still log in to the game to experience all eras of Star Wars. Players can enjoy the Clone Wars, the Galactic Civil War, and the conflict between the Resistance and the First Order, with many different game modes and characters.

Star Wars Outlaws is set to release in 2024.
