Science fiction and fantasy go hand in hand, like superheroes and capes. Movies that bridge the two introduce viewers to fantastical worlds and unimaginable creations that set fans' minds ablaze with possibilities they never considered. Whether it is traveling through space in the blink of an eye, or fighting against giant monsters with equally giant robots, a good sci-fi fantasy movie cant be matched.

9 Tomorrowland

Tomorrowland stars George Clooney, Britt Robinson, and Raffey Cassidy in a chaotic and fantastical adventure. Robinson, who plays teenage genius Casey Newton newly targeted by automatronic kidnapers after an encounter with Athena, a former AI recruiter for a secret, highly advanced society named Tomorrowland, played by Raffey Cassidy. Athena comes to Casey’s rescue.

Along the way, they encounter Frank Walker, a disheveled outcast of Tomorrowland who walked away from humanity after a bitter taste of reality, played by George Clooney. All three set out on a journey to save what they think is Tomorrowland but what is actually the world. Tomorrowland is a magnificent wonder of technology and artificial intelligence, a fully self-sufficient Utopia created by the most brilliant minds in the world but hidden from the rest, which has triggered the demise of the world it was supposed to protect.

8 Jupiter Ascending

Jupiter Ascending is a somewhat space opera film starring Mila Kunis, who plays Jupiter Jones, an orphan who belongs to a family of intergalactic royalty that has discovered the source of immortality; and Channing Tatum, who dawns the garb of Caine, a soldier turned bloodhound who is charged with the retrieval of Jupiter, but his feelings get in the way.

Jupiter's world is turned upside down when she is transported across entire galaxies in the blink of an eye making powerful enemies along the way. Meeting the emotionally mute Caine, the two of their fates intertwine as Jupiter attempts to reconcile with her gruesome heritage, and Caine tries to reconcile with his violent past.

7 Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets

Valerian takes place in an intergalactic city that wonders throughout space based in the former US space stations, now called Alpha. Valerian is a wondrous and visually dazzling story that joins two intergalactic peace officers who become enthralled in a secret war between the earth federations and a nearly extinct planet of humanoid extraterrestrials.

Dane Dehaan and Cara Delivinge star as Major Valerian and Sergeant Laureline, a well-paired team who decide to aid the humanoid race in finding a new planet for them to inhabit and to hopefully cleanse themselves of the role they played in an entire planet's genocide.

6 The Adam Project

The Adam Project was recently released on Netflix, with Ryan Renalds mainlining the film. The story follows an eccentric yet amateurish Adam Reed who has broken the law in the future to travel back in time to rescue his wife, who disappeared while on a mission in the past.

While running from authorities, he reluctantly recruits his younger self for aid, and shenanigans ensue. The story devolves into a cataclysmic temporal event that places alternate versions of all parties involved against each other.

5 Alita: Battle Angel

Alita: Battle Angel is a futuristic cyberpunk story set on the earth of 2563, where human cybernetic enhancement is a common and safe practice. The story follows Alita, played by Rosa Salazar, a hyper-advanced, one-of-a-kind cyborg known for its devastating fighting capability during the great war that ravaged the earth three hundred years ago.

Alita is found by Christoph Waltz’s character, Dr. Dyson, a former surgeon now grieving from his daughter's death who sees a new chance at fatherhood when he happens upon her dismantled remains. However, with her revival, Alita’s desire to know who she was and where she came from is also revitalized, which drags her once again into a world of fighting and violence.

4 Ready Player One

Ready Player One follows a young boy, Wade Watts, played by Tye Sheridan, living in the year 2045, where technology has risen to unbelievable heights and has been taken by storm by an incredibly advanced alternate reality massive multiplayer game called Oasis. Wade is one of the best players in the game and obtains a large amount of fame after winning one of the challenges needed to obtain the egg, a mysterious item left behind by the game's creator.

The Egg is highly sought after by the players in Oasis and even the company that owns it, as no one knows what it may contain. Wade partners with his friends and new allies to beat the challenges together and discover what the egg is and what a brilliant man's legacy really leaves behind.

3 Mortal Engines

The Mortal Engines is set in a distant future dystopian version of earth where humanity has been driven to roam the earth in steampunk-themed mechanical vessels that carry cities across the unlivable terrain. Hera Hilmar plays Hester Shaw, an orphaned renegade with her heart set on revenge on the man that killed her mother, Thaddeus Valentine, played by Hugo Weaving.

After a failed assassination, Hester becomes shackled to a naive historian named Tom, and the two end up on an adventure to stop a war and prevent the destruction of what little of civilization remains.

Dylan O'Brien stars in The Maze Runner as Thomas, at the start, an amnesiac that wakes up in the middle of a green-filled oasis called the Glade, surrounded by four giant walls. The newest member of a community of boys, Thomas, is bewildered and thrown off balance by his predicament.

Trapped inside a cage with no ceiling at the end of a mechanical maze that changes every night, with no rhyme or reason to stay other than the word of everyone who came before him. Beatrice uncovers a slue of nefarious schemes behind the scenes, including mind-altering human experimentation as lines are drawn in the sand between friends, allies, and family as war approaches.
