Sony has yet to officially reveal the design it decided on for thePS5,and all fans have to go on currently is a logo for the upcoming console, put out by Sony just a few weeks ago. This has led to some fans to create their own mock-ups of what they think the PS5 could potentially look like. Some fan designs simply go off of the artist’s imagination, while others adhere to the previous design principles that Sony has utilized with older PlayStation models. Until Sony shows anything off, these PS5 design concepts are about as good as anything for now.

Every generation of PlayStation has a base look that updated models iterate upon. With all of those designs in mind, here are five of the best PS5 design concepts found online.

X-Shaped PS5

Leaked PlayStation 5 alongside console concept image

From Twitter user The Drunk Cat, this design is reminiscent of the original PS4 design with a hint of Xbox, with a power and eject button shown on an appendage or corner of the box. The PS5 logo appears on the opposite side which is questionable, as Sony has tended to feature console logos on the front (with the exception of early PS3 models). The PlayStation logo appears on the top of the console (or the side if stood up) much like it did on the PS4.

This PS5 design’s flaw, as observers have noted, does not seem ventilated enough to support the PS5’s purported 2GHz GPU. The leaked development kit of the PS5, on the other hand, does appear to have an adequate amount of fan spots.

PS5 Dev Kit Render

This image was rendered by LetsGoDigital, and is directly based on the leaked development kits that were posted online in 2019. Seeing as how the design is that of the PS5 development kit, there is a high possibility that this is not going to resemble the final consumer product when it launches in the holiday season later this year. Before the PS4’s final form was officially shown at E3 2013, there were also leaks of the development kit for the console posted online but it ended up looking nothing like it. Still, this design has its own value to it.

PS5 By Turn On

Created by German company Turn On, this PS5 design concept imagines a high-luxury and sleek PS5 that resembles a futuristic lunchbox. Besides the striking blue power-on line that runs across the front and sides of the machine, the concept also features a wireless charging pad on top of the console for up to two of the user’s controllers.

The new PS5 controller has also been reimagined to feature a touch screen that has some quick functionality to it. If it were real, this console may be much more expensive than what Sony fans would likely be willing to shill out.

PS5 Concept By CrimsonNocturne

This simplistic design is probably about as close as one can get to imagining what the PS5 will be revealed to look like. The concept, designed by ResetEra user CrimsonNocturne, takes into account all of the main principles of Sony’s console design history. It retains the sharp and flat shape of the PS4 models but creates a focal point toward the disc drive, making the location to insert a disc clearer than ever. It has big areas for ventilation on one of its sides and back.

The only noticeable issue with this design is its placement of USB ports which have been rendered on the back. Every popular console that has featured USB ports has always had at least one either on the front or side.

PlayMan by CURVED/labs

CURVED/labs created a concept that combines elements of PlayStation and Nintendo Switch. Called the PlayMan, this design imagines a portable way to play PS4 games with all of the convenient features of a Switch. It can be played while docked and connected to a TV or in table-top mode. Besides being a creative fan crossover, this concept hits on the fact that Sony has a history of following innovations by Nintendo. From the PlayStation Move to remote play to Sony’s attempt at mobile gaming, Sony has always publicly cited Nintendo as sources of inspiration for particular products.

The issue with this being a PS5 device lies in its apparent power. A Switch-like device can barely run PS4 games let alone bigger PS5 games. Unless there is a main box that this portable device streams from, the PlayMan concept just doesn't cut it for big console games, no matter how cool and convenient it may seem.

ThePS5 is scheduled to be released holiday 2020.
