The PS3 is one of the best-selling consoles of all time. Despite originally being released back in 2006, Sony’s powerhouse machine still holds up today in terms of graphics and features. The PS2 and PS4 may have outsold the PS3, but there's something very special about this system. Gamers were introduced to HD graphics, and it went on to have an incredible library of games.

Shooter games feel right at home on the PS3, and players have been treated to some of the best shooters of all time on this system since its release. Here’s a list of the best ones worth revisiting today.

8 Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare on PS3

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare was released on PS3, Xbox 360 and PC way back in 2007 and became an instant hit on the PlayStation. It was the first in the series to break away from Call of Duty’s traditional World War II setting and took the warfare to the modern era.

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is highly regarded as one of the best shooter games of all time, and it paved the way for the Call of Duty games that we all love today. This one is well worth a revisit on the PS3.

7 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 on PS3

Following on from the extremely successful Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 was the next Call of Duty game to be released on the Modern Warfare side of things. Once again, this Activision blockbuster was a huge hit on the PS3.

Some will even argue that Modern Warfare 2 is even better than the first game in the series. Although greeted with a ton of controversy on release, the game was praised for its memorable campaign and excellent multiplayer. A remastered version was released on PS4 in 2020, but the PS3 edition campaign is still well worth a revisit today.

6 Borderlands 2

Borderlands 2 on PS3

Gamers were first introduced to the Borderlands series back in 2009 when the first game was released on consoles. However, Borderlands 2 took the series to another level, and the PS3 version is rated the highest.

This unique first-person shooter, which was developed by Gearbox Software, was and still remains a pleasure to play on the PS3. Sure, the game has been brought to many other systems since, but there's something very special about playing Borderlands 2 on original PS3 hardware.

5 Killzone 2

Killzone 2 on PS3

Killzone 2 is a PS3 exclusive, and the PS3 is the only way players can play this Guerrilla Games blockbuster. This is without doubt the best entry in the Killzone series, though the PS Vita exclusive of Killzone: Mercenary certainly gives it a run for its money in that respect.

The second game in the Killzone franchise was praised for its excellent graphics at the time, which still impress to this day. The story is great, and the gameplay is outstanding. Killzone 2 on the PS3 should be given another go, especially as almost ten years have passed since the last Killzone game.

4 Battlefield: Bad Company 2

Battlefield Bad Company 2 on PS3

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 is a game that certainly deserves a remaster or sequel. This was an incredible game to play on the PS3, building on the solid foundations set by its predecessor. It’s amazing to think that Battlefield: Bad Company 2 came out on PS3, Xbox 360 and PC over a decade ago.

The single-player campaign, where players play at protagonist Preston Marlowe was great, but the multiplayer was what made this game really shine. Still, the campaign is well worth a revisit in 2022 and beyond.

3 Resistance 2

Back in 2008, gamers were given a sequel to the excellent Resistance: Fall of Man, which was a PS3 launch title. Resistance 2 expanded on everything that was brilliant in the first entry and dialed it up a few notches.

For a game in 2008, Resistance 2, backed by Sony’s money, was a stunner visually, and the gameplay was thrilling and frenetic. Fans of the series only got to see one more console Resistance game with number 3 in 2011, though PS Vita owners got the mediocre Resistance: Burning Skies in 2012. All the Resistance games are worth a revisit, but this one more than the others.

2 James Bond 007: Blood Stone

James Bond Blood Stone on PS3

James Bond 007: Blood Stone is an underrated game. It received mixed reviews when it first released on the PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2010, and the sales figures were not great. Due to that, plans for a sequel were scrapped.

Nevertheless, fans of 007 were treated to a very solid game with Blood Stone. The graphics were okay, and the story was mediocre, but playing as the iconic James Bond in HD graphics on the PS3 was a real joy to behold at the time. While gamers wait for another 007 game, dive back into Blood Stone on the PS3.

1 Max Payne 3

Max Payne 3 Cropped on PS3

Max Payne 3 is like a fine wine, it's matured with age and remains a stellar title to play. In truth, it’s a travesty that the original version is stuck on the PS3. Sure, there is an impressive PC version out in the wild, but this Rockstar masterpiece deserves a remaster. Maybe after the remakes of Max Payne 1 & 2 are out, gamers will finally see an updated version of Max Payne 3?

The third game in the series was greeted with mixed reviews, as the story moved away from traditional Max Payne. However, the gun mechanics, core gameplay and graphics still hold up remarkable well today. Max Payne fans should dust off their PS3 and give this incredible game a revisit.
