There is more to a Pokémon than meets the eye. While many novice players may not yet realize the varied elements that play into building an effective team, Pokémon veterans and competitive players know that success depends on much more than just catching them all. Game Freak introduced Abilities during Gen 3, and immediately increased the importance of strategy in team-building and battle. The right Ability can be the difference between winning and losing, but only if it is paired with the right Pokémon.

The Levitate Ability renders all but 1 Ground-type move useless and negates the effects of many other Pokémon Abilities. There are currently 41 Pokemon with Levitate, but not all are created equal. Here are the 10 best Pokémon with the Levitate Ability.

10 Lunatone

This Rock/Psychic-type Pokémon was introduced in Generation 3 and is the counterpart to Solrock. Lunatona has no evolution, but is noteworthy for being one of the few Special Attacking Rock-types. It has decent stats, a solid move-pool, and the only Ability it gets is (you guessed it) Levitate. Levitate blocks Ground, usually one of Rock's major weaknesses. Still, Lunatona lacks a strong Defense. While it does have 5 resistances, it also has 6 weaknesses. So, it can prove volatile if not used carefully. Offensively, Lunatona is spectacular, hitting 6 types Super Effectively.

9 Cryogonal

As a rule, pure Ice-types have it rough defensively. They are only able to resist one type of attack, Ice. Cryogonal breaks the rule, simply because it has access to Levitate. This provides it something most Ice-types are missing, an Immunity to Ground-type moves. Levitate makes Cryoginal safe to switch in for battles that an Ice-type would normally have to avoid. Cryogonal has excellent stats, and is one of the extremely rare Ice-types which can move fast. It also benefits from great Special Defense and Special Attack stats. Finally, Cryogonal learns Flash Cannon, a Steel-type move which allows it to inflict major damage to Ice, Rock, and Fairy.

8 Vikavolt

Vikavolt is an incredibly strong Pokémon. It is equal to Chandelure and Cursola for having the highest Special Attack stat out of all non-legendary Pokémon. Additionally, the Bug/Electric typing gives it just 2 weaknesses, Fire and Rock. Levitate is the only ability it can have, meaning it will always be immune to Ground-type moves.

As for the move-pool, it is capable of learning some real game-changers such as Thunderbolt, Thunder, Bug Buzz, Flash Cannon, Sticky Web, and Agility. Agility, in particular, stands out, as it patches up Vikavolt's biggest problem, its low Speed. After 1 or 2 uses of Agility, Vikavolt is able to move before many of its opponents.

7 Bronzong

Bronzong formerly benefited from an interesting component of Steel-types that was lost in Generation 6. Prior to Gen 6, Dark and Ghost-type moves were resisted by the Steel. This meant that  Bronzong (a Steel/Psychic-type) only had 2 weaknesses, Fire and Ground. The interesting part is that the player got to choose which of the 2 weaknesses Bronzong would have, thanks to its abilities: Heatproof (Fire-type moves do 1/2 damage) and Levitate (Ground type immunity). Even though this is no longer the case, Bronzong remains an extremely useful Pokémon as it still can only have a maximum of 3 weaknesses. It benefits from its Steel-typing by having high Defense stats, and it gets access to moves like Body Press and Gyro Ball, giving Bronzong a fairly effective offensive presence as well.

6 Flygon

Flygon doesn't inherently need Levitate as much as other Pokémon due to being a Ground/Dragon type, which would naturally reduce damage when hit with a Ground Move. However, we can all agree that having immunity from those Ground attacks is even better. Flygon has high Attack and Speed, in addition to its phenomenal offensive typing, making it a very powerful attacker. It can learn strong, offensive Moves like Fire Punch, Steel Wing, and Rock Slide.  Flygon can also learn Dragon Dance, for boosting its stats. All of this makes Flygon a Pokémon worthy of inclusion on your team.

5 Weezing

Weezing has just 2 weaknesses in Ground and Psychic, due to being a pure Poison-type. Levitate makes for a naturally complimenting Ability, as it removes Weezing's Ground weakness. This makes it far more difficult to counter during battle. Pure Poison-types have the reputation of being simply mediocre, but Weezing has a lot going for it. It has a high Defense stat, learns Dark Pulse allowing it to attack Psychic-types, and Flamethrower for Steel-types. Further complimenting its offensive capability, is its above-average attacking stats on both sides, making Weezing a competent mixed attacker.

4 Rotom

This mischievous poltergeist (Pokégeist?) was added in Generation 4. Rotom and its alternate forms are the only ones of their various types, with Electric/Ghost, Electric/Grass, and Electric/Fire all being unique. Levitate negates the only weakness natural to the Electric side of its typing (Ground), allowing all forms of Rotom to take full advantage. Wash Rotom in particular benefits from Levitate, as it makes Grass its one-and-only weakness.

Rotom's stats are passable, but its alternate forms have it much better.  Rotom gains extra defenses and Special Attack after changing, at just the cost of only 5 Speed points. The move-pools for all of its Forms are not spectacular, but they work. Additionally, all of the forms gain a move that matches their type, giving them a Same Type Attack Bonus.

3 Mismagius

Due to the combination of Levitate and Ghost-typing, Mismagius has a whopping 3 Immunities, with only 2 weaknesses. It has absolutely fantastic stats, with its Special Attack, Special Defense, and Speed all exceptionally high. Mismagius further benefits from Ghost being a powerful attacking type as only Normal and Dark can resist it. However, it is the move-pool where Mismagius shines the brightest. It has access to superior attacking Moves from Ghost, Dark, Fire, Grass, Psychic, Rock, Fairy, and Electric, as well as Moves such as Nasty Plot and Calm Mind for stat-boosting.

2 Hydreigon

Hydreigon is an absolute powerhouse, with Dark/Dragon being a superior typing both defensively and offensively. Levitate compliments its typing, giving Hydriegon 2 Immunites, and amazing overall stats. It has an exceptional move-pool allowing it to learn powerful moves on both the Physical and Special Attack sides. Hydreigon's biggest drawback is the quadruple weakness to Fairy. But let's be honest, Game Freak almost had to give it a huge weakness just to make things fair.

1 Eelektross

Eelektross and Levitate are truly a match made it heaven. Being a pure Electric-type, Eelektross only has one natural weakness, Ground. However, its only Ability happens to be Levitate, making Eelektross the only Pokémon with no weaknesses. The only way to do Super Effective damage to Eelektross is to have something that can suppress/take away Levitate. So, unless you happen to have either Wandering Spirit, Mummy, Skill Swap, or Gastro Acid, AND ALSO have a Ground-type move to attack, you're in trouble. Eelektross is the Levitate Champion!
