Rogue Trader is the first CRPG set within the Warhammer 40k setting. The game follows the heir of a powerful rogue trader who commands legions of soldiers and high levels of influence. Suddenly thrust into power, the player must fight against various foes, create diplomatic relations, and survive in the harsh far future. There is no time for peace, only war.

The player is presented with a detailed and expansive character creator when starting Rogue Trader. One of the most important choices players will make is deciding their origin story. This choice will affect the skills and abilities of the character going forward, with each choice offering a different style of play.

Often ruling over huge hive cities or even planets, these lucky few families rarely suffer the fear and oppression most citizens experience in their daily lives.

Choosing means that the player character was raised in extravagant wealth and had access to the best that the imperium could supply. This origin has buffs to intelligence and fellowship, which is ideal for persuasion-type playthroughs, relying on words rather than violence. This origin will go well with either a loyal or heretical playthrough as well.

Choosing this origin for a player character means they are a true believer in the Imperium and its goals. They will do what needs to be done for the good of the whole, and to maintain discipline and loyalty during the mayhem of war. They are the front line of propaganda and the enforcers of Imperial ideals among the rank-and-file soldiery. The Commissar origin gives bonuses to Fellowship and Coercion, which can help when attempting to manipulate characters.

The forces of Chaos are always attempting to find a way into real space, and through psykers, they can achieve this.
