South America is a beautiful continent that people should definitely take some time out to explore. The lush vegetation and unique culture present in this area make it a blast to explore in every way, and any travel aficionado owes it to themselves to head to this country at some point in their lives. However, going to a different continent altogether is easier said than done, and not everyone can drop everything at a moment's notice to go to South America at the drop of a hat.

This may irritate people who are genuinely fascinated with this continent, but there are other ways that this urge can be satiated instead. For starters, players can check out virtual recreations of South America's various landscapes in the video games of their choice. Open-world titles are especially useful since players can explore these maps and get lost in these tropical mazes for hours on end!

5 Shadow Of The Tomb Raider

Shadow of the Tomb Raider Lara Croft Oil Fields

Shadow of the Tomb Raider is the final hurrah in Crystal Dynamics' rebooted trilogy before Square Enix decided to sell the majority of their western IPs and companies to Embracer in what many industry analysts have called an absolute bargain. Hopefully, Embracer will be able to do justice to Lara Croft's adventures and help players enjoy another stellar adventure featuring the iconic British archaeologist.

There's no denying that the gameplay loop of Shadow of the Tomb Raider isn't anything special, with combat feeling especially dated. However, the game more than makes up for it with its stunning graphics and fun exploration segments. Players have to journey to the legendary city Paititi, trying to stop a Mayan apocalypse that Lara accidentally triggered.

4 Just Cause 4

Gliding in Just Cause 4

The Just Cause series is known for having many cathartic moments where the ultimate goal is to make as many things explore as possible. Player fun is prioritized over everything else, with many fans loving the idea of absolutely eviscerating opponents and destroying the environment with their firepower.

Players explore the oppressed region of Solis, trying their hardest once again to overthrow a dictatorial regime while causing as much mayhem as possible. While Just Cause 4 is a decent addition to the series, the lack of graphical fidelity coupled with one of the most uninteresting stories in the realm of video games led to many people being fairly disappointed with this entry in the Just Cause series.

3 Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Wildlands

Exploring the world in Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands

Ubisoft is known for developing many open-world games, establishing somewhat of a name for themselves in this genre despite many gamers being tired of their copy-paste design philosophy. Their Tom Clancy series also eventually got transformed into a sandbox title, which split fans down the middle.

While the game has many issues, some of which stem from its lifeless open world, fans who like messing about in a vast open world and laying waste to their enemies will love what Wildlands brings to the table. Teaming up with other players and tackling the vast horde of missions present in this title makes for a great time, and players will be too busy having fun with their friends to really care too much about the many negatives present in this experience.

2 Mercenaries 2: World In Flames

Third-person view of driving down a street

Mercenaries 2 is a game where players are encouraged to blow everything up and cause as much mayhem as possible. This may seem like a tasteless gameplay loop given how the game focuses on the war-torn country of Venezuela, but players who are willing to look past this simple and poorly-executed premise will find themselves enjoying a satisfying open-world game that may not be anything remarkable, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing either.

That being said, players should be ready to deal with poor AI across the board, with enemies being so easy to mow down that the challenge is pretty much eliminated after a point. Regardless, players who love games that allow them to destroy everything in sight will love what Mercenaries 2 brings to the table, even if it falters in a lot of other critical departments.

1 Driver 2

Many people dislike the fact that the Driver series hasn't seen a new entry for quite some time now. Players loved the idea of checking out grittier and more mature racing games that focused on heists, robberies, and everything else along the same lines. The first game fulfilled this notion to a T, but the popularity of the Grand Theft Auto series led to future games in the series trying to emulate the success of Rockstar's franchise with varying results.

For starters, Driver 2 allowed the main protagonist to exit his vehicle and roam around the map. The games aren't truly open world per se but feature enough trappings from the genre to satiate fans of these sandbox titles. There are four cities that players will explore over the course of their journey, including the well-recreated cityscapes of Rio de Janeiro.
