As one of the most popular streaming services, Netflix offers a lot of content for fans of TV shows. Not only does Netflix create its own shows, but it also contains those made by other production companies. People have the chance to stream long-running TV shows on the service.

However, not everyone has the time or the wish to watch a series that has multiple seasons. In that case, the best option is to pay attention to the miniseries available on Netflix. Some of them have a lot to offer and no fan of high-quality TV should miss out on watching them.

5 Alias Grace

Alias Grace TV Series doctor and Grace

If anybody enjoys crime stories with female heroines in the leading roles that are inspired by real events, they should pay attention to this miniseries. Even more so if their favorite show is The Handmaid's Tale (since Alias Grace is based on another book by the same novelist, Margaret Atwood). The miniseries tells the story of Grace Marks, an Irish immigrant who works in Canada and is accused of her employee's murder.

The best option is not to study details about the case before watching the show in order to avoid spoiling the surprises. The investigation as well as uncovering Grace's life doesn't disappoint. It helps that Sarah Gadon is excellent at portraying a conflicted character that the viewers won't quite know what to think of. The miniseries has six episodes, making it much easier to stream quickly than The Handmaid's Tale with four seasons.

4 Collateral

Collateral

Carey Mulligan is one of the most talented British actresses of her generation, and even though she's been starring in movies lately, she also sometimes comes back to TV. She did so in this complex British crime show. Mulligan stars as the detective Kip Glaspie who doesn't believe the official interpretation of a crime and decides to find out the truth.

That might be more dangerous than she thinks. Mulligan is sympathetic as Glaspie, so it's easy to stay invested in her life and wish her the best. The investigation is captivating since it turns out there's more to it than meets the eye. Collateral is a civil story, yet one that has the power to make the audience think while they watch all four episodes.

3 The I-Land

The I-Land

The I-Land is one of those underappreciated series that mostly flew under the radar. And those who did watch it often gave it a low rating or compared it to the better-established iconic show Lost. However, The I-Land works as a standalone. The series centers on a group of people who wake up on an island and have to discover what's going on.

They not only have to figure out how to get home but also fight distrust and enmity between themselves. The series offers a lot of tension and creates mysteries that the viewers will want to know the answer to. The ensemble cast is excellent and the setting - the island - is visually beautiful. The I-Land ran for seven episodes, making it one of the longer miniseries on Netflix.

2 Maniac

Maniac

Science fiction is one of the most popular genres, so a lot of sci-fi TV shows run for multiple seasons and years. Maniac is one of the few notable exceptions to this rule, despite the fact that it offers a stellar cast. Emma Stone and Jonah Hill play two people who meet by accident when they both attend a strange scientific experiment. But things soon get more complicated. The series has the power to surprise the audience with its plot twists and turns.

It's set in a futuristic New York that seems realistic, and the main duo gives strong performances, even though their characters aren't always sympathetic. Maniac has a solid cast overall, other than Stone and Hill, the show also includes names such as Justin Theroux, Gabriel Byrne, and Sally Field. Even though it's longer than many other miniseries, with ten episodes in total, Maniac is ideal for binge-watching the series fast.

1 The Queen's Gambit

Beth Harmon writes down the last move during her final game against Vasily Borgov in 'The Queen's Gambit'.

Chess doesn't seem like the most interesting topic to some people but when a series can present it in a different light, it works. The Queen's Gambit is a good example of that as it became a hit and one of the shows that some people wish wasn't just a miniseries. The Queen's Gambit works as it is, though, offering a tight-knit story about one extraordinary woman who hasn't had it easy but still makes the best of her life...by playing chess.

The series creates a strong retro atmosphere and Anya Taylor Joy in the leading role of Beth Harmon garnered a lot of praise from both the fans and the critics. The good news is that even though The Queen's Gambit is over, those who would like to return to the same world can read the book by Walter Tevis.
