Although games may differ in genre, there are certain features that are shared across them all that grabs the interest of players. Be this the luscious environments that amaze or the creatures that inhabit the worlds players are left to explore. Games like Elden Ring and The Last Guardian may differ in gameplay but something they share is the importance of the beasts that players either help or attack.

That is why these games are by far the best due to their great mythical beasts that the players must either face in combat or use to travel around these environments. Some of these mythical beasts are actually based off real life mythologies while others are from the game's very lore.

As the true form of the Elden Ring, players have no choice but to face this foe as the final boss if they hope to complete the game. This ginormous creature that looks to possess a whole galaxy inside of it is the literal embodiment of order as well as being a challenging foe for the player to face.

The Elden Beast is unlike any dragon seen in the souls-like games, not to mention that it turns the first defeated foe of the battle into a sword that it wields with its humanoid hands. While some players may not remember this fight fondly, the design of the character itself is something to be remembered.

7 Minotaur – Assassin's Creed Odyssey

The Minotaur from Assassin's Creed Odyssey

Assassin's Creed Odyssey relied heavily on Greek mythology for its storytelling. This allowed the player to face mythical creatures around every corner from the niche to the most heard of in stories. One exciting quest has the player preparing to face the Minotaur, the real one, not the man pretending to be him.

This half-man, half-cow hybrid is by far one of the hardest mythical beasts to defeat in the game, but this doesn't stop players from admiring his design. Especially as his glowing eyes show the unrelenting rage of the beast that outlived his creators.

Dragons of legend have returned to Skyrim and with so many to choose from, it's hard to decide which of these dragons are the best of them all. While Paarthurnax is a brilliant choice, the best of the mythical beasts has to go to Alduin who inadvertently saves the player's life before laying waste to Helgen.

Better known by the title of World Eater, Alduin is a threatening foe that players don't get to face directly until the end of the game where he taunts the main character, hiding above the fog during the battle.

4 Hippogriff – Hogwarts Legacy

Players weren't disappointed as alongside many other fan favorite creatures, players can unlock their very own Hippogriff mount by advancing further into the Hogwarts Legacy main storyline. Ditching that broom for the half-eagle, half-horse hybrid is something many players will want to do quickly to soar the skies on a well-respected beast.

3 Chocobo – Final Fantasy

It would be a crime to mention mythical beasts without talking about the ginormous commonly yellow birds that many characters across the Final Fantasy franchise have used as mounts to travel across the lands. The Chocobo is not only hilarious in design but also incredibly adorable as they have progressed to fulfill many purposes that horses would since Final Fantasy 2.

He quickly becomes an ally of Kratos and Atreus when they wake him from his slumber in Midgard. While players cannot understand a word that he speaks this didn't stop players from falling in love with the giant snake that returned once more in God of War: Ragnarok.

1 Trico – The Last Guardian

Out of all the mythical beasts met throughout gaming by war one of the greatest of them all that players fell in love with instantly is the ginormous dog-like creature Trico. Throughout The Last Guardian players rely on the aid of Trico to escape danger as well as telling a story that is sure to have the player emotional at the end.

Even with all of Trico's power, it is still down to the player to guide him through the environment while feeding this loyal companion barrels of food and removing the spears of their foes from his fur.
