The question of how to make a story even more interesting is something that movie creators deal with regularly. One of the tried-out ways how to make things more complicated for the characters is to bring a love triangle into the scene. Falling for two people at once is challenging, and can lead to a lot of dramatics, as well as hilarious situations.

Plus, the characters are torn between various life paths, which makes the movie unpredictable. Some of the best love triangles in movies immediately hook the audience and won't release them till the very end because they will just want to know who will the main hero choose!

6 Bridget Jones's Diary: Bridget, Mark, And Daniel

Bridget Jones's Diary 2001

Other than Renée Zellweger's performance as the lovable and relatable Bridget Jones, the first Bridget Jones movie also offered a strong love triangle. Bridget is crazy about her boss Daniel (Hugh Grant) who isn't such a good guy, though. As time progresses, Bridget falls more and more for the seemingly grumpy and cold Mark Darcy (Colin Firth) even though she despised him at first.

It's true that it's easier to guess who will Bridget choose in the end than in some other movies but Firth and Grant are still fun to watch, thanks to the many funny scenes that appear in the movie. And if that wasn't enough for the audience, they get another love triangle in Bridget Jones's Baby (2016) - this time between Mark, Bridget, and her new love interest Jack (Patrick Dempsey).

5 Titanic: Rose, Jack, And Cal

Titanic

Titanic is one of the most iconic movies of all time, and not just because it won a record-breaking number of Academy Awards. It gives a lot of space to the Titanic sinking and the tragedy surrounding it, but at its core, the movie is ultimately the story of a tragic romance. All fans of the movie will know that the rich Rose (Kate Winslet) falls for the poor artist Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio), but is already engaged to the cruel Cal (Billy Zane).

While there's seemingly no competition when it comes to Rose and her feelings, she still has to figure out how to be with Jack and escape Cal. Unfortunately, the Titanic sinking solves the problem for her, but only the second part, as Jack dies during the sinking. Rose survives but assumes a new identity and hides from her former fiancé. So even though Rose and Jack don't get their happily ever after, at least Rose is free to be her own woman at the end of the movie.

4 Casablanca: Rick, Ilsa, And Victor

Casablanca Movie (1942)

Casablanca is one of the classic movies that stood the test of time. It takes place during the tumultuous times of World War Two, and since the movie premiered in 1942, it mirrors the atmosphere of those uneasy years. The fact that there's a war going on also closely affects the lives of the main characters. When Ilsa and her husband Victor come to Casablanca because Victor's running from the Nazis, Ilsa reunites with her former lover Rick.

It turns out that the bond between them isn't gone. In other times, their story could have had a happy ending, especially since Humphrey Bogart as Rick and Ingrid Bergman as Ilsa have strong chemistry together. But despite that, the two don't stay together as Rick advises Ilsa to go with her husband and stand by his side. As a result, the ending of the movie is both heart-breaking and memorable.

3 Something Borrowed: Rachel, Darcy, And Dex

Something Borrowed 2011

Even though the plot of Something Borrowed (2011) sounds like a typical rom-com - a woman is in love with her best friend's fiancé - the movie is anything but. In fact, it's an ideal story for the cynical romantic since it shows that people can sometimes be terrible to each other and make questionable decisions. Ginnifer Goodwin stars as Rachel, the woman who falls for the handsome Dex but is too afraid to say anything to him.

So, of course, Dex starts dating Rachel's best, more outgoing friend Darcy instead, and the two get engaged. That doesn't stop Rachel from having an affair with Dex. The love triangle's messy and not always pretty, but that makes it seem much more real. The movie also works with sarcastic humor, mostly showcased by John Krasinski's Ethan, one of the few heroes in the movie that don't make such a mess out of their personal lives.

2 Match Point: Chris, Nola, And Chloe

Match Point 2005

One of Woody Allen's best movies takes the audience from the USA to London - and to a bitter love triangle that doesn't end so well. Jonathan Rhys-Meyers stars as Chris, an ambitious young man who works as a tennis coach. He improves his social standing when he starts dating the rich Chloe (Emily Mortimer). The only problem is that Chris is also attracted to the beautiful and lively Nola (Scarlett Johansson). Initially, it seems like everything will be alright but when Nola gets tired of being just the mistress, things get ugly.

The movie is full of tension and can surprise the audience with its plot twists. The actors are excellent, other than the main trio, the movie also cast the likes of Matthew Goode, Brian Cox, and Penelope Wilton. The main love triangle is more realistic than in many movies since it shows that in situations such as these, people hurt each other emotionally more often than not. Plus, Chris is one of the most complex characters who have ever graced the silver screen, so the viewers won't know whether to be angry at him or feel sorry for him.

1 The Philadelphia Story: Tracy, Dexter, And Mike

The Philadelphia Story 1940

Katharine Hepburn is one of the most iconic actresses of all time, and also the only actress who has won four Academy Awards. The Philadelphia Story then happens to be one of her best movies, and not just because Hepburn co-stars with two other acting legends, James Stewart and Cary Grant, in the movie. Hepburn's Tracy is a rich young woman with her own mind who's set to marry the somewhat boring George. Things get complicated when her ex-husband Dexter shows up and also the journalist Mike who's doing coverage of the wedding.

The movie will keep the audience guessing what will happen next, who will Tracy choose, and how will the characters find their way to each other. The story is clever, sad at times, hilarious in other scenes, and the main cast gives unforgettable performances. The Philadelphia Story might have premiered in 1940, but it still works today and no fan of this genre should miss out on watching it.
