Having a basis on literary expectations instead of purely wish fulfillment made Mushoku Tenseian interesting read. These decisions were also enough to inspire Kanata Yanagino to write The Faraway Paladin.
Like Magonote, Yanagino took a long time to establish protagonist Will and center his growth as a driving force. He also did a lot of background work to set up the world and ended up creating a fantastic magic system. Side characters and villains are as emotionally developed as Will, who does more than befriend or vanquish the cast. But unlike Mushoku Tensei, Will is celibate. His rigid standards allow no space for romance, though it does allow for genuine connections.

In the isekai romcom Full Clearing, Makoto’s initial blessings are weak and one even puts him in danger. It takes time for him to develop into a competent fighter, and even then his limited physical and mental abilities force him to be resourceful during fights. Despite the slow start, reading the POVs of other characters as he fights can be satisfying to readers invested in his growth.

Constance Grail is, in a way, the opposite of Rudeus. Pushed into a corner, Constance or Connie allows the ghost of Scarlett Castiel to possess her. Their second shot at life puts them on the path of a pure villainess who gets her revenge. Connie and Scarlett are also thrust into a gripping mystery that pays off in unpredictable ways and culminates in an emotional rollercoaster.

Although there are time skips in Mushoku Tensei, it mostly sticks to Rudeus’ POV and shows the progression of time. The close perspective allows his development to feel organic and to strongly resonate with readers, especially when his journey comes to a close.
Spice and Wolf is a beloved light novel series precisely for this reason. The novel takes its time to develop Lawrence and Holo, especially the latter as her past takes the spotlight in some volumes. Economics, trade, and history also preoccupy much of the series’ word count, aside from the protagonists’ slow-burn romance.

Maganote's other series naturally has great character development, even when the premise seems sketchy. Judith, Thunder Sonia, Primera, and other side characters have full agendas utterly separate from the hero Bash, who is often a conduit for their plans. Every race in the world also has violently distinct values and customs that often produce conflict in the series.
The main protagonist Bash is consciously trying to change for the better. Though he’s matured since the great war, his growth is still not enough to achieve his life goal: to find a wife and lose his virginity before he becomes an orc mage. Trying to learn how to date the non-orc way, and learning to navigate every nation’s cultural differences, are part of his quest to avoid having a visible mark of virginity on his forehead.

What Do You Do at the End of the World? Are You Busy? Will You Save Us? is a long title that summarizes the series well. Broken hero Willem awakens to a world he failed to save 500 years ago. He ends up caring for the Leprechauns, fairies with the appearance of young girls and the only weapons against complete obliteration.
As the only human alive, Willem throws his life into their care. His newfound love for the children and his iron will carry him through major tragedies. It’s a touchpoint that gives the bleak series a tiny bit of hope that is carried to the sequel.
