7 Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure (1988)
No Keanu Reeves fan should miss this sci-fi comedy, which brought a lot of attention to the young actor early in his career. Reeves' Ted and his best friend Bill (played by Alex Winter) are two students who want to play in a band together. But first, they have to pass an important history exam, or Ted will have to enlist in the military. Luckily, the friends get to travel through time, which is ultimately the best way to prepare for any history test.
The movie takes both the heroes and the viewers on a memorable journey. It became such a classic that it got multiple sequels, with the most recent one coming out in 2020.
6 The Day The Earth Stood Still (2008)
Some fans joke that Keanu Reeves is not of this world, because he doesn't seem to age. In the remake of the classic sci-fi The Day the Earth Stood Still, Reeves does play an alien and does an excellent job of it. His alien Klaatu travels to Earth to warn humanity of an impending crisis, but most people treat him with hostility.
In order for the humanity to survive, Klaatu has to discover the things about Earth that are beautiful. A lot of sci-fi movies focus on action, but this story makes the audience think, and Klaatu is one of the most sympathetic aliens of all time.
5 Dracula (1992)
Another long-running joke, even more popular one among his fans, is that Keanu Reeves is a vampire. So the adaptation of Bram Stoker's horror novel Dracula deserves more attention. This is not only because of Reeves' presence, but also thanks to the movie's unique visual style.
Even though Keanu Reeves doesn't play Dracula in the movie (rather, he acts the part of the young lawyer Jonathan Harker), he's impossible to miss. Some moviegoers claimed it's not Reeves's finest performance, but whatever the case, he doesn't disappoint in the role and it's fascinating to see him seemingly out of his typical element in a horror movie.
4 Devil's Advocate (1997)
Keanu Reeves has played alongside many great actors over the coutse of his career. But one of his best onscreen partnerships happened in this thriller, where Reeves starred alongside Al Pacino. Once again, Reeves portrays a lawyer who works for a man who might not be who he says he is.
The movie builds an intense atmosphere, and even though Reeves' character Kevin Lomax isn't always sympathetic, it's ultimately easy to cheer on him thanks to the threat his new employer -—who might or might not be the Devil — represents. If his fans should watch one Reeves' non-action movie from the 1990s, it's Devil's Advocate.
3 The Lake House (2006)
Keanu Reeves usually isn't the first actor about whom people think when somebody says "star of romantic movies." Yet Reeves can pull off this genre too, as he proved in the 2006 movie The Lake House. In this film, Reeves reunites with his co-star Sandra Bullock from the action movie Speed for a date-night flick.
In The Lake House, the main characters start building a bond thanks to the messages and letters they're exchanging. The only problem is that Alex (Reeves) lives in 2004, while Kate (Bullock) is from 2006. The movie is the right mixture of romance, fantasy and drama, making it stand out even among the rest of the romance genre.
2 The Neon Demon (2016)
Regardless of whether he plays the leading role or not, Keanu Reeves often manages to shine in the movies he appears in. And that's even when his character isn't one hundred percent the good guy. The horror drama The Neon Demon focuses on a young model named Jesse (Elle Fanning) who arrives in Los Angeles to build a career, and quickly becomes successful thanks to her youth and beauty.
However, not everybody wishes her success. Keanu Reeves plays a supporting part of Hank, the owner of the motel where Jesse lives. Even though his character is sometimes grumpy and unpleasant, he's still ultimately a better person than Jesse's so-called friends who surround her.
1 To The Bone (2017)
Drama movies often give the greatest chance to actors to show what they can really do — and that's true even if they don't play the leading role. In the darkly realistic drama To the Bone, Lily Collins stars as a young girl who suffers from an eating disorder and is trying to turn her things around. Collins lost a lot of weight for the part, and her performance feels scary and real.
However, the movie wouldn't be what it is without Keanu Reeves's doctor Williams, who helps Collins's heroine Ellen and shows her she can lead a better life. Reeves's performance is very civil, and accordingly to the movie's title, it cuts to the bone.
