It's tough for a main character to get through a horror movie without a best friend. Some of the time, the protagonist is totally on their own, especially if the film is about the supernatural or being isolated somehow. But there are many horror movies where a character has a close pal (or a few) who they investigate with, which proves that facing a killer or defeating a villain is always easier with a team.
There are a lot of scary films about high school or college students who travel in a group and always hang out together, and there are also some adult pairs who are close and find themselves in an unimaginable situation. These horror movie friendships definitely stand out and mean a lot to the characters.
Julie James And Helen Shivers (I Know What You Did Last Summer, 1997)
I Know What You Did Last Summer is a solid slasher movie and does something that the worst teen horror movies can't do: explores a friendship that has seen better days and might seem like it's past its prime. A year after accidentally running over and killing someone, Julie James (Jennifer Love Hewitt) and Helen Shivers (Sarah Michelle Gellar) haven't kept in touch. Julie went away to college and Helen stayed behind in town, working at a department store.
When the friends see each other again, Helen is devastated to realize how much things have changed. As they explore the mystery, Helen asks what happened and shares that she misses their relationship. Remove the horror element and this is a realistic portrait of how friendships alter as people go to college and get older.
Blair Lily And Her Friends (Unfriended, 2015)
Unfriended has one of the best horror movie friendships because the movie delves into the secrets that people can keep from each other and how toxic a group of people can really be for each other. Blair Lily (Shelley Henning) is chatting with her friends online: Jess Felton (Renee Olstead), Val Rommel (Courtney Halverston), Adam Sewell (Will Peltz), and her boyfriend Mitch Roussel (Moses Storm).
As the ghost of Laura Barns enters the chat, the cracks in the group show loud and clear, with small and big betrayals coming out of the woodwork. Unfriended is a creative and inventive horror film but also shows that people don't always tell each other everything, even when they claim to be best friends.
Chris Washington And Rod Williams (Get Out, 2017)
Chris Washington (Daniel Kaluuya) and Rod Williams (Lil Rel Howery) are best friends in the hit Blumhouse horror movieGet Out. Chris works in TSA at the airport and is one of the best horror movie supporting characters.
The two share an important friendship as Rod warns Chris about visiting his girlfriend Rose Armitage's (Allison Williams) family and he seems to know that something terrible is going to happen. Rod is also there to save Chris and it's clear that he would do anything that he could for him. The two care about each other and Rod is always there to crack a joke, which Chris appreciates. Rod and Chris have natural, easy interactions which suggest how close they are and how long they have known each other.
Bird Fitcher And Kasey (Polaroid, 2019)
In 2019's Polaroid, Bird Fitcher (Kathryn Prescott) and Kasey (Samantha Logan) have a sweet friendship and one that becomes integral to the movie's plot. One of the most underrated teen horror movies, the film explores what happens when Bird finds a camera that releases a mysterious entity that then murders people.
As Bird investigates, Kasey is along for the ride, showing how meaningful their friendship is to both of them. If Kasey didn't care about Bird, she would laugh and say that Bird doesn't sound like she's making any sense and they need to move on and think about something else. Instead, Kasey is there the whole time.
Deena, Sam, Kate, And Simon (Fear Street Part One: 1994, 2021)
Deena Johnson and Sam Fraser's Fear Street love story is a significant and meaningful part of the Netflix movie, and Kiana Madeira and Olivia Scott Welch play these parts perfectly. The couple is also good friends with Simon (Fred Hechinger) and Kate (Julia Rehwald) and, ultimately, the four form an amazing team.
As the characters figure out who the killer is in Shadyside, they bond even more, and it's horrible watching Simon and Kate get killed. While the movie is a fun throwback to '90s slasher stories, it's also a portrait of teenagers who are coming into their own, learning who they are, and having fun spending time together. Even though danger is right there, the characters can't help but laugh and joke around.
