The horror genre is represented fairly well in gaming, housing some amazing atmospheric masterpieces that have become must-plays in their own right. After all, the immersive medium of gaming means that players can get scared out of their wits through well-built set pieces with horrifying endings. The fun of getting scared silly is enhanced further when multiple players band together to try and fight against the ghastly threats that haunt them.

There are several established horror franchises around, but a lot of them haven't capitalized on this concept yet. So, here are some of the best franchises that could definitely benefit from a game that enables an asymmetrical multiplayer experience.

10 Silent Hill

Silent Hill HD Collection 10th Anniversary

The Silent Hill series is in a bit of a hiatus right now, which is a shame since its last offering, P.T., was an absolute masterpiece that redefined the horror genre in many ways. It's high time this series enjoys the comeback it deserves.

The perfect candidate for this would be a multiplayer game where players team up to either hunt or hide from the many horrors that lie within these games while solving puzzles. It's a simple yet great idea that could be bolstered with the Silent Hill name.

9 Amnesia

Speaking of iconic horror franchises, it's hard to not mention the Amnesia series in this conversation. After all, this game kickstarted the wave of first-person horror games that try to scare the wits out of players at every given opportunity.

While some people might not rate Amnesia that highly, it's a shame due to how great the game really is. A multiplayer game that capitalizes on the game's flee-to-survive mentality could genuinely be great.

8 Outlast

Outlast was a game that took everyone by storm when it was released. The game featured a brilliant story and a strong gameplay loop, although its ending left much to be desired.

The second game suffered from being in the shadow of its former title, and now Outlast is nothing more than a fading series. Perhaps a multiplayer-focused approach will bring more eyes toward the series once again.

7 The Evil Within

The Evil Within is a combination of action and horror gameplay that functions well. While the first game had its fair share of issues, its sequel was comparatively more polished and was a ton of fun to play through.

The idea of an action-horror multiplayer experience sounds absolutely amazing, especially in the universe of The Evil Within. After all, this series houses some truly nightmarish creatures, and it'll be incredible to shoot them down with friends.

6 System Shock

The two games in the System Shock series are renowned for being some of the greatest immersive sims ever made, especially when it comes to the second game. The oppressive atmosphere and amazing gameplay form two of System Shock's strongest pillars.

The idea of roaming around a desolate spaceship with friends as SHODAN sends one threat after another sounds pretty exciting indeed. Given that there's a new game and a remake of the first game that's coming out, hopefully, this multiplayer title can become a reality as well.

5 Slender

There was a time when Slender was easily one of the most popular horror game icons around. Trying to gather all eight pages while being hounded by the Slenderman is a harrowing yet highly enjoyable experience.

With the sheer number of Slenderman fan games, it wouldn't be a surprise if one of them was a multiplayer experience. However, an official multiplayer Slender game where players band together to hunt down these pages would be a pretty novel concept indeed.

4 Clock Tower

Clock Tower is a series that might be pretty obscure right now, but this franchise boasts some serious quality. A combination of pulse-pounding gameplay and ingenious puzzle-solving have helped the series' best games shine brightly indeed.

Since the series has remained dormant for quite some time, the idea of a new game is nothing more than a pipe dream at this point. However, a game in the Clock Tower universe with asymmetric multiplayer would be a ton of fun indeed.

3 Manhunt

Manhunt

Manhunt is one of the most controversial gaming franchises around, with its developer feeding off this outrage to generate more marketing for the game. It's a shame that Rockstar hasn't revisited these titles, since they definitely hold a ton of promise.

In fact, a new game where players band together to either avoid a serial killer or hunt down innocents could be engaging. Rockstar has a ton of experience with multiplayer games now with the advent of Grand Theft Online and Red Dead Online, so this could be a possibility.

2 Fatal Frame

The twins from Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly

Fatal Frame's premise might be fairly simple, but the games can be pretty scary regardless. It's pretty hard to try and take photos of nightmarish creatures when they're breathing down the player's neck at every opportunity...almost literally, at times!

This chaotic and scary gameplay can work well within the bounds of a multiplayer session. If such a game is executed well, then players can share some memorable moments indeed.

1 Five Nights At Freddy's

The five main villains from Five Nights At Freddy's

One of the most popular and divisive video game franchises of all time is Five Nights at Freddy's. The series has evolved from a single jumpscare game about animatronics into something completely different.

Since the franchise has no boundaries when it comes to gameplay restrictions, a multiplayer game where players avoid these monsters could be an engaging prospect. However, whether this game will be executed properly is anyone's guess.
