Highlights

  • Baldur's Gate 3 has become the highest-rated PC game of all time, surpassing other popular titles in terms of critical acclaim.
  • The game has also made its mark in the user ratings category, ranking among the top ten highest-rated PC games based on player reviews.

Baldur's Gate 3 is now the highest-rated PC game of all time, having seized that title some 10 days into its market debut. This development shouldn't come as a surprise, not least because Baldur's Gate 3 already became the highest-rated new game of 2023 across all platforms.

While the first two installments in the iconic franchise put BioWare on the map as the developer of ambitious story-driven role-playing games, the third entry was handled by the RPG veterans at Larian Studios, who licensed the Dungeons and Dragons IP that Baldur's Gate is based on from Wizards of the Coast. The developer switch ended up being entirely seamless, with the newly released game thus completing the incredibly consistent Baldur's Gate trilogy.

In yet another testament to that universal critical acclaim, Baldur's Gate 3 just became the highest-rated PC game of all time, boasting an overall critic score of 97 on Metacritic. While Disco Elysium: The Final Cut also managed to reach that figure, Larian's RPG outranks that of ZA/UM by virtue of having 16 more reviews as of August 14. This milestone was widely expected among the fandom, as Baldur's Gate 3 has been closing in on the title of the highest-rated PC game ever made within days of its August 3 release.

Larian's newest RPG has also already cracked the top ten highest-user-rated PC games of all time, as it currently boasts nearly 5,900 player reviews with an average score of 9.1, thus ranking tenth in this category. For context, the nine games above it all have a marginally better average player score of 9.2. As for its Metascore ranking, the arrival of Baldur's Gate 3 pushed The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim out of the top 10 highest-rated PC games of all time. That list now includes two Baldur's Gate titles, with the second installment in the series—Shadows of Amn—ranking eighth.

Metacritic's all-time PC top 10 has now changed three times in just as many years, as the success of Baldur's Gate 3 was preceded by those of Disco Elysium: The Final Cut and Persona 5 Royal released in 2021 and 2022, respectively. The last title that cracked the list prior to this trio was the 2015 PC port of Grand Theft Auto 5, which currently ranks fourth.

In terms of multi-platform rankings, Baldur's Gate 3 is currently the ninth highest-rated game ever made, sharing the aggregate score of 97 with Red Dead Redemption 2 and the two Super Mario Galaxy games. It remains to be seen whether its upcoming console ports help it climb those rankings, especially seeing how the Xbox Series X/S and PS5 versions of Baldur's Gate 3 will be slightly different from the PC one.

Baldur's Gate 3 is available now on PC and launches September 6 on PS5, with an Xbox Series X/S port also in development.
