After an initial delay causing it to be pushed back to April, players may need something else to keep them occupied until Dead Island 2 is finally in their hands. Thankfully there have been plenty of other zombie titles since the original release in 2011 as well as other action-packed games that are sure to keep players occupied in the meantime.

8 Atomic Heart

While some players felt that Atomic Heart didn't have the greatest story, or that the open-world elements of the games were a little empty there is no denying the similarities the gameplay has with Dead Island 2.

Although the vast majority of the game sees the player taking on deadly robots there is the odd occasion of horrific mutant which at points can feel like the player is exploring a zombie apocalypse. Alongside this is the intense combat that sees taking slashes at robots to reveal their wiring similar to the new flesh mechanic of Dead Island 2 to make the player feel deadlier.

7 GTFO

A big element of the original Dead Island was the fact that players could join the mayhem with their friends, this continues to be the case in Dead Island 2. GTFO may not have heaps of gore or the occasional funny one-liner but something it does do well is create an intense co-operative experience in a survival horror setting.

The game itself was inspired by Left 4 Dead which arguably also shares some similarities with Dead Island and therefore players looking a more serious survival experience should look no further than working as a team in GTFO.

6 How To Survive

How To Survive is an action role-playing game that plays almost as if it was a top-down Dead Island title. Stranded on an island swarmed with zombies, players must attempt to survive each day as if it was their last all while trying to find a way to escape.

With the freedom to explore and craft the weapons needed to hold back the onslaught of undead. Players can also find hilarious manuals that attempt to teach the player how to avoid an untimely demise to the zombies that get int their way. Once again players don't need to play alone as it's easy to invite others as well as allowing couch co-op.

5 Resident Evil 2

Unsurprisingly, another great horror survival title that players should try out if they haven't already is Resident Evil. With either the first person titles such as Resident Evil 7 or Resident Evil Village as well as the original third person games, there is a lot to look forward to in this long-running franchise.

Resident Evil 2 has to be mentioned due to it being a brilliant remake of the original as well as being a great way for newcomers to the Resident Evil franchise to familiarize themselves with its roots. Plus, characters like Leon do tend to say some funny things from time to time.

4 Days Gone

Deacon and Boozer riding on a motorbike in Days Gone

Days Gone is a brilliant action-adventure title that many players have forgotten about. Players take on the role of Deacon, a biker just trying to survive in a world that is attempting to get used to the zombies that now take up the majority of America. When he finds out that his wife may still be alive, he goes out on his own to find out the truth.

The Horde mechanics of this brilliant open-world title makes for some interesting gameplay. Especially when the player is attempting to remove nests while hoping they have enough rounds to quell the mass amount of undead that hope to protect their home.

3 Dead Rising 2

Matching the humor of Dead Island 2 perfectly, Dead Rising 2 has players exploring a zombie infested casino and shopping plaza in Nevada. In order to make their way through the zombies and look after their bitten daughter the player must put bits and pieces they find together to make the wackiest of weapons similar to the crafting in Dead Island 2.

Besides the zombies, players will also be challenged to take on Psychopaths that have gone mad from the recent outbreak leading to some hilarious encounters that will leave the players wanting to experience them all over again.

2 Left 4 Dead

Continuing on the theme of fun and gory gameplay, Left 4 Dead is another classic zombie title that players who are looking forward to Dead Island 2 should experience. Not only are there plenty of levels to complete all with their own interesting zombie designs that have inspired other games like it, but it's also a brilliant title to try with friends.

There is nothing better than dealing with hordes of undead while hearing the player's character make some witty remark or bantering with the other character's that make up their team of survivors.

1 Dying Light

Out of all the games players should attempt before Dead Island 2 releases is the much-loved action survival game Dying Light. Players are free to explore a post-apocalyptic open-world where every surface can be climbed by the player.

Besides creating monstrous weapons to take down zombies and a brilliant story to follow, many players will get lost in the parkour that allows them to scale skyscrapers or jump out of reach of the undead. There is so much to explore in the urban environment of Harran that players are sure to have plenty to do before Dead Island 2 releases.

Dead Island 2 launches on April 28 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
