Many players assume that first-person shooters can't have a decent story due to a large variety of the genre focusing on multiplayer modes that prioritize competitive gameplay. However, this isn't the case for all FPS games as some don't even have a multiplayer mode and instead have amazed players with their intense and well-thought-out stories.

8 Metro 2033

Releasing in 2010, Metro 2033 might not be the most recent Metro title to be published, but it is still a great first-person shooter with an incredible story. Metro 2033 takes place mainly in the Moscow Metro after nuclear warfare has altered plenty on the surface, because of this many places in Russia have been left incredibly irradiated while survivors in the subways are threatened by mutated animals.

In between these survival horror elements, players explore an interesting story that sees them explore the Metro of Moscow in a hope of assisting others while also hunting down the mysterious mutated creatures known as The Dark Ones. Throughout the title players will be able to make compassionate choices which may steer the ending of the game in another direction.

7 Borderlands 2

The Borderlands franchise has been an incredibly successful first-person shooter with an unbelievable story that has impressed players in a majority of the games. However, by far the greatest out of all the games in the franchise must be Borderlands 2.

Combining the right amount of dreadfully good humor with the end goal of preventing Handsome Jack from opening the vault Borderlands 2 is a great title to enjoy alone or with a group of friends. As mentioned, the main villain of the game, Handsome Jack, is by far the franchise's most-loved villain, attracting many players to the game.

6 Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

While Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 may have been both remastered and remade entirely, nothing will take away from how brilliant the story was for the original title back in 2009 when it was first released.

Call of Duty may be highly praised for its incredible multiplayer achievements that have many players competing daily in match after match; occasionally the team behind it creates an incredible campaign that has players completing it over and over again. As the player takes primarily the role of Roach, players explore various locations through different missions to finally put a stop to the extremist Makarov and an end to the war.

5 Half-Life

Although arguably quite a simple story when compared to other FPS titles, Half-Life still received high praise from players for its brilliant story-telling and interesting mechanics. Gamers took control of Gordon Freeman, a Theoretical Physicist, a man who accidentally opens a portal to the alien world of Xen causing a huge invasion.

Players must fight their way out of the facility while avoiding both the aliens of Xen and the task force that has been given the mission to clean up while finding a way to close the portal. The players' gameplay was mainly uninterrupted as the game told the story through scripted scenes that kept players in the action; an intense action many continued to enjoy in future Half-Life titles.

4 Halo: Combat Evolved

Releasing on the Xbox, Halo: Combat Evolved was the very first Halo title to be developed by Bungie and published by Microsoft Game Studios; back then both teams likely doubted that Halo would become as popular as it has, but that's unsurprising for those that have played and enjoyed the original trilogies' story that included the powerhouse known as Master Chief.

While the franchise as a whole has been brilliant for both players and Xbox, by far the greatest game has to be the first one. It was the first time players had visited the ring world as well as being the first encounter against the alien force known as the Covenant. Besides this, Halo: Combat Evolved proved that Master Chief had potential to become a great mascot of the console through the even greater story that followed afterward.

3 Wolfenstein: The New Order

Wolfenstein has released several well received games over the years that continue to allow players to attack and foil the plans of the Nazis. However, out of all the games that have been released only one of these first-person shooters has had a story that truly fascinated players.

Set in an alternate timeline where the Nazis won the war, players explore a world full of freakish yet futuristic technology as they attempt to survive against the experimented upon forces created by the Nazis. As some people have not given up the fight just yet, even in the 1960s.

2 Bioshock

Bioshock is another mesmerizing first-person shooter that impressed and sucked into a whole new fan base of people that fell in love with not only the setting of Rapture but also the interesting current story and backstory of the city. The first game introduced players to the world of Rapture, it once stood as a place for men and women to be free until the greed kicked in through the drug known as Adam.

Now, the city lies in ruins as the players attempt to escape Rapture and put an end to the danger there. Even with three titles under its belt, many fans of Bioshock hope that someday there will be another game that allows them to return to the once wonderful underwater city known as Rapture or Columbia that sits in the sky.

1 Titanfall 2

By far one of the greatest first-person shooters of all time with a great story that amazed players in the action-paced game known as Titanfall 2. While the original Titanfall interested a lot of players due to the multiplayer allowing gamers to control powerful mechs known as Titans, Titanfall 2 introduced players to the lore as well as interesting story of a Titan pilot.

Few FPS titles have been as emotional as Titanfall 2, which upset many players further when no news of a third title was mentioned. Many hope that someday the story of Titanfall will continue onwards especially with hope well-received the second game was.
