Horror series in the anime industry are few and far between, with ones featuring female villains even more scarce. However, the few that do incorporate female characters as an antagonist are bound to leave a harrowing impact. While most of these villains embody the twisted girl archetype, some are outwardly welcoming and deceptive, in turn making their villainous acts all the more jarring.

Be it the thirst for blood or the thrill of the hunt, these heinous women will stop at nothing to kill their prey. Their absent expressions, insatiable bloodlust, and psychopathic antics are enough to petrify viewers, making these female horror anime villains some of the most twisted characters in the industry's history.

Thrillers with horror elements will be considered since there are not all that many traditional horror anime out there.

6 Yuno Gasai – Future Diary

Future Diary - A picture of Yuno Gasai.

Being a friend to the series' protagonists, Yuno Gasai isn’t a traditional villain that’s out to kill people for pleasure. Instead, Yuno only kills those that she deems a threat to Yukiteru, albeit in an extremely gruesome way. Yuno’s characterization is the epitome of the Yandere archetype, obsessing over Yukiteru and going to extreme lengths to ensure he stays alive till the very end.

Future Diary’s premise is already quite dark and twisted, with Yuno further bringing in the element of horror with her murdersome antics and ruthless character. She even turns against Yukiteru at one point, revealing her true twisted nature.

5 Lucy – Elfen Lied

 Lucy in Elfen Lied

From a sweet and charming girl to a murderous serial killer, Lucy is the embodiment of the phrase "never judge a book by its cover." Lucy’s character as a whole is a morally gray area as her killer instincts are a result of years of experimentation and trauma. Being a Diclonius, a mutant race with superhuman powers, Lucy is forced to lie low and try to assimilate with the rest of the humans.

However, her attempts at fitting in tend to fail as her murderous split personality takes over, ruthlessly killing people left and right. Elfen Lied’s premise may be twisted and dark, though it's not far from the reality of human beings as a whole.

4 Miyo Takano – When They Cry

Miyo Takano When They Cry

When They Cry revolves around an annual festival in the village of Hinamizawa, which becomes the epicenter of murders and disappearances every year. At the center of these mysterious murders is Miyo Takano, a nurse working in the village clinic. Miyo is an extremely intelligent and delusive character, even deceiving viewers about her true nature.

While the superstitious villagers have dubbed these mysterious deaths as the Oyashiro Curse, the actual mastermind, Miyo Takano, controls the plot from the shadows. She has no regard for human life, viewing people only as pawns that can be utilized to further her grandfather’s research on the people of the village.

3 Sachiko Shinozaki – Corpse Party: Tortured Souls

After a group of schoolmates perform the “Sachiko Ever After” friendship charm for their transferring friend, the girls are suddenly transported to the cursed Heavenly Host Elementary School. Sachiko Shinozaki is a ghost that haunts this school, torturing those unfortunate enough to be engulfed by this otherworldly place.

Sachiko is a malicious ghost that enjoys torturing her prey, even going as far as removing her victims’ tongues before killing them. The only way to escape is to appease Sachiko by performing the Sachiko Ever After charm once more. Since Corpse Party: Tortured Souls is an animated OVA based on the video gameCorpse Party, many elements of the story differ. However, Sachiko's harrowing essence is accurately translated into the OVA, giving way to plenty of petrifying scenes.

Junko Enoshima is among the sixteen high school students stuck inside Hope's Peak Academy. The only way to escape is by murdering a fellow student without being found guilty in the subsequent trial. The premise of Danganronpa already seems quite aberrant, with Junko Enoshima adding to the sadistic nature of the show.

The setting of the series is perfect for Junko, as this sadist has no remorse or guilt over brutally murdering her own classmates. She takes great pleasure in inflicting pain on others, be it physically or mentally. Moreover, her intelligence allows her to easily get away with murder, steering away the trail with ease and pinning the blame on others.

1 Isabella – The Promised Neverland

Isabella in The Promised Neverland

The Promised Neverland incorporates several gut-wrenching themes and subtexts, albeit with horror at its core. The most harrowing element of the series is the villain itself, Isabella, the caretaker of the Grace Field orphanage. While she may initially seem like a caring mother-figure to the orphans, it soon becomes apparent that her true identity is nowhere near that of a mother.

The children at the orphanage discover that the orphans being adopted are actually being sold to demons as meat, with Isabella at the center of this inhumane ordeal. However, Isabella has no other choice but to put up with the demon’s demands, threatened with the same fate as the orphans if she were to refuse.
