Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince - Beginner Tips

Players can keep these beginner tips in mind as they start their adventure in Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince.

Four monsters can be in battle at once, and the other four will be in the reserves if the main party falls. Monsters can learn abilities and increase stats through Talent Points that they gain through leveling up. There are a lot of creatures in Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince, so hopefully, this list will help cut through which ones to go after and which ones to ignore by how good their Talent Trees are.

7 Accelerate

Increase Speed On One Ally (3 Talent Points)

Accelerate Talent in Dragon Quest Monsters The Dark Prince

Accelerate is a classic spell in the Dragon Quest franchise. It operates a lot like Haste in the Final Fantasy series, which players may be more familiar with. Accelerate will increase the speed of one ally for a few turns, which is randomized.

The only monster in the starting zone that has this ability almost from the get-go is the Wing Slime. The Wing Slime looks a lot like Healslimes, which look like squids but with floppy wings. There is another spell worth acquiring a Wing Slime for: Whoosh, which will be discussed later.

6 Buff

Increase Defense On One Ally (3 Talent Points)

Buff Talent in Dragon Quest Monsters The Dark Prince

Buff is another great supportive spell to get for the party in Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince. It will increase the defense of an ally for an indeterminate amount of turns like Accelerate. Sometimes, the best offense is a good defense in an RPG, especially when facing a nasty boss or giant monster in the world.

Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince - How to Scout Monsters

There are over 500 Monsters that players can battle or scout for their party in DQM: The Dark Prince.

Two monsters in the starting area can learn this spell. There is the Killerpillar, along with the Komodo. Of the two, Komodo might be the best option as it can also learn Heal.

5 Heal

Restores HP For One (10 Talent Points)

Heal Talent in Dragon Quest Monsters The Dark Prince

Heal, for those unaware, will restore HP to one ally. While it’s nice Komodo can learn to Heal along with Buff, it’s not the best monster to recruit with Heal. One of the first monsters players will encounter with Heal is the iconic Slime.

It can be good for starting out, but once the Capsichum monsters come into play, the Slime should get retired. Capsichum is a great medic-like character/monster in the game because it can learn debuff cures too. Squelch will remove poison from the party while Tingle will cure paralysis for everyone.

4 Sizz

Fire Attacks All (3 Talent Points)

Sizz Talent in Dragon Quest Monsters The Dark Prince

Sizz is one of the best offensive spells for a good majority of the game. It will erupt a fire wave beneath an entire row of monsters in battle. Slimes can learn this spell too, but the offensive capabilities of Slimes are just as mediocre as their defensive powers with Heal.

Vegandragora is the better of the two choices. It has some decent stats attached to it as well, plus it’s a dragon-type monster. An RPG that allows players to befriend monsters wouldn’t be complete without a dragon or two in the party.

3 Splish

Water Attack On One (3 Talent Points)

Splish Talent in Dragon Quest Monsters The Dark Prince

Splish is not as great as Sizz, as it will only target one enemy at a time. However, it’s still a valuable offensive water spell because it’s the only one of its kind for quite a while. The only monster that can learn it is the Khalamari Kid.

The Khalamari Kid monsters are adorable little squids with conch shell clubs. They can also learn Heal and, even more valuable, Cock-a-Doodle-Doo, which will wake up all party members who are asleep. They may look a bit goofy as party members, but Khalamari Kids are quite valuable.

2 Whoosh

Wind Attacks All (10 Talent Points)

Whoosh Talent in Dragon Quest Monsters The Dark Prince

Whoosh is a tremendously advantageous spell in the early hours of Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince; It will target all enemies and hit them with a wind attack. Sizz and Whoosh are the two best offensive spells for the first few hours because RPG fans know multi-target spells will make battles go by quickly. Players can get this spell early if they answer Monty’s questions correctly to get a Cruelcumber.

Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince - How to Fuse Monsters (Complete Synthesis Guide)

Synthesis is a new Monster breeding method in Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince that results in rare, powerful Monsters for a small price.

Players who missed out on this opportunity can redeem themselves by recruiting a Dragonthorn in the opening area instead. Dragonthorns and Cruelcumbers have the exact same Talent Point path, which is not uncommon in this game. Also, as a reminder, Wing Slime can learn Whoosh, too.

1 Zam

Dark Attack On One (3 Talent Points)

Zam Talent in Dragon Quest Monsters The Dark Prince

Zam is an offensive spell that will hit a single enemy with a dark-based attack. It can be learned by two monsters around the starting area, and they are both bat-like creatures. Dracky is quite literally a bat, and Teeny Sanguini looks like a Mogwai with wings from the Gremlins movie franchise.

Dracky will learn more offensive spells and abilities, while Teeny Sanguini will specialize in the debuff department. Debuffs can be good, but it’s just as effective to put resources into supportive spells instead, like the aforementioned Accelerate and Buff. That’s why Dracky is the way to go to fill up the party of eight.
