Project Zomboid is one of the hardest games of all time, and despite having simple graphics with a top-down perspective, it also has some of the most realistic mechanics found in any open-world game. For example, characters need to cook to stave off hunger, they must battle against the depression caused by a zombie apocalypse, and they should stick to the shadows and make as little noise as possible when zombies are nearby.

One of the coolest things about Project Zomboid is that players can play online in never-ending servers where they will constantly stumble upon the remains of other players long dead. With power cuts, the threat of winter looming over the massive open world, and much more, the attention to detail is staggering and will constantly surprise even the most veteran players.

Arguably the best Early Access open-world game is Valheim which took the gaming world by storm back in 2021 with its addictive exploration and survival gameplay. Either alone or with friends, players are dropped into the procedurally generated Norse-inspired world and must start from scratch, slowly discovering the secrets behind survival.

The game is best enjoyed blind and as players explore the progressively more dangerous biomes, they will find new resources and tools that can be combined in surprising ways. The building aspect of the sandbox game is one of its best, allowing players to create epic bases or settlements. Over the years, Valheim has received numerous updates both large and small, and more biomes will be fleshed out further before the full release of the game.
