In 2021, more than in previous years, people wanted and needed to laugh. Sitcoms and comedy series have always been popular, especially when times are darker. 2021 saw the premiere of multiple comedy series working with different topics and coming from various countries.

Some of them focus on the personal relationships or work life of their heroes while others bring supernatural elements, fantasy, or sci-fi into the story. Whatever the case, the best comedy series of 2021 have the potential to attract a lot of viewers, depending on their style of humor. And the good news is that it looks like a lot of them will continue in the future years as well.

7 The Cleaner

The Cleaner

The Cleaner mostly flew under the radar for two reasons. It's a British series with dark humor and it has a specific topic that won't sit well with everyone. Greg Davies stars as Paul Wickstead, an older grumpy man who has an unusual job.

Paul works as a crime scene cleaner and he meets a lot of people, some of whom are innocent and some are criminals. The absurd situations that happen in the show as well as a rich plethora of strange people Paul meets make for a memorable show.

6 The Chair

The Chair

The Chair is one of the series that both manage to entertain the viewer and point out relevant real issues people should deal with. Sandra Oh stars as Ji-Yoon Kim, the first woman who becomes the chair in a major university and she has to deal not only with her new job but also with people who don't believe in her.

The first season has only six episodes so it's possible to stream it on Netflix fast. It helps that it's both hilarious and sometimes biting in its portrayal of the real world.

5 Ghosts

Ghosts US show

Not every American remake of a British show manages to keep a high quality but Ghosts did it. A young couple inherits an old house, moves there, and wants to open a hotel but ghosts are already living in the house and don't want any changes.

The best thing about the series is that each ghost is different which leads to a lot of funny interactions between them. It also helps that each episode has its own story, usually a somewhat bizarre yet hilarious one, and of all the actors in the show give excellent performances.

4 Home Economics

Home Economics

Some of the best TV series don't need to have an overly complicated story. Home Economics focuses on the lives of three siblings, one of whom is wealthy, the other one poor, and the third one belongs to the middle class.

They try to get along and also solve the problems in their lives, not all of them steaming from money, or lack thereof. The series will be relatable to many viewers, especially those with siblings, as it shows in a funny way how difficult it can sometimes be to get along with family.

3 The Prince

The Prince 2021

The animated series The Prince is another show that people will either love or hate. It portrays the British royal family, especially the life of Prince George. However, it would be a mistake to think that anything in the series is based on real events or that it portrays the British royalty the way they truly are.

The series works with absurd, dark humor that will seem over the top for some but others will enjoy it. Each episode is short, only about ten minutes, which makes it easy to binge watch the series. It also has a talented voice cast that includes actors such as Iwan Rheon, Orlando Bloom, or Sophie Turner.

2 Resident Alien

Resident Alien

When aliens come to Earth, they're either friendly or hostile, usually not anything in between those two sides. Harry is an exception to this rule. After crashing on Earth, he took on the identity of a local doctor in a small village in Colorado, and as he gets to know humans better, he starts having doubts about his mission.

Alan Tudyk is excellent in the leading role and some of the funniest moments happen when his "Harry" has a hard time understanding what people are doing or when he tries to act just like them and fails.

1 Schmigadoon!

Apple TV+ musical comedy series Schmigadoon

Living in a musical might sound like a dream come true but it's not as perfect as it seems. When an arguing couple enters the magical town of Schmigadoon where everything is supposedly idyllic, they discover they can't leave the town until they find true love. And that might just be out of their hands.

The six episodes see both the main heroes as well the town and its residents transform. It contains a lot of funny situations and well-done musical numbers. Thanks to the originality of its idea and the excellent actors (such as Kristin Chenoweth who plays the main villain), Schmigadoon! is a good choice even for someone who doesn't usually watch musicals.
