Warhammer 40k: Tacticus is a strategic mobile game where players take control of different characters from an array of Warhammer factions, fighting against AI enemies, in arena battles, or even against other players. It's always updating, with more characters constantly being added. From classic Space Marines to more recent Thousand Sons, Tyranids, and Dark Angels, the Warhammer 40k: Tacticus character lineup might seem a bit overwhelming.

What makes Tacticus unique is that it's not just the Epic and Legendary characters who are necessarily the best. Players can unlock common or uncommon characters, level them up to Rare or Epic tier, and they can be some of the best in the whole game. It's relatively easy and straightforward to unlock lots of characters, making Tacticus the ideal mobile game for Warhammer fans.

9 Commissar Yarrick

Commissar Yarrick Warhammer 40k Tacticus

Player who are new to the game have the option to spend a few bucks to unlock this character. If they're happy with spending some money, it's definitely worth it. Summons are an important and powerful ability in Tacticus, and Commissar Yarrick is summons galore. The Astra Militarum soldier can summon a multitude of units who can also attack on the same go. It's great, as long as players aren't matched against him.

Commissar Yarrick's weakness is that he has slightly less base health than other characters. However, he is still a strong pick, allowing players to cruise through the Indomitus Campaign. Useful in both campaigns and multiplayer, Commissar Yarrick is a strong and unmissable pick for any solid Tacticus lineup.

8 Roswitha

Roswitha is great, especially when it comes to bosses in Guild Raids. She does high damage with her basic attack and has naturally high health. Her ability rains down 2x fire damage (4x against daemons) and even includes a bonus extra damage percentage. Part of the Adepta Sororitas faction, Roswitha is usually unlocked early on in the game.

Warhammer might be one of the most well-known tabletop games along with being an expensive hobby, but some are even more expensive.

The only real downside to Roswitha is that it's tricky to obtain her character shards in order to continue leveling her up. Most of her shards are found in either arena drops by chance or requisition summons. But both her ranged and melee attacks are viable high-damage options, and her character design is amazing.

7 Aleph-Null

aleph null warhammer 40k tacticus

Aleph-Null is the best Necron character in Warhammer 40k:Tacticus, and one of the best characters in the whole game. It can summon two scarab swarms next to an enemy target, who immediately attack on the same turn. They do a lot of damage, especially to characters weak to energy damage. To make Aleph-Null's ability even more powerful, the scarabs have a chance to duplicate themselves at the start of every turn. This increases the number of friendly units players have on the field indefinitely (as long as the scarabs are alive).

These scarab units are pretty hard to kill, so unless the opponent has the right kind of character to counter them, it's not unusual to see a battlefield covered in scarab units. If that wasn't enough, Aleph-Null can also heal itself or other Necrons units every turn. It also has a passive healing ability when it's positioned next to friendly units.

6 Archimatos

Archimatos Warhammer 40k Tacticus

The Black Legion's "Master of Possession," Archimatos, is a powerful chaos unit who can be unlocked early in the game. He's another summoning unit who can spawn up to 4 daemons surrounding an enemy unit, as long as the spaces are available. These daemons pack a punch, dealing lots of damage, but don't tend to last long since they have less health.

Archimatos' passive ability comes in when he attacks. When he dispatches an enemy unit, Archimatos will summon a friendly dameon in their place. He deals psychic damage through either ranged or melee attacks, and packs a punch when necessary. His summoning ability is useful in guild raids and arena battles, making Archimatos a viable option for most scenarios.

5 Maugan Ra

Maugan Ra Warhammer 40k Tacticus

One of the more recent additions to Tacticus, Maugan Ra is an Aeldari unit with the subtitle "Dark Reapher Phoenix Lord." His character design is imposing: a tall, beefy skeleton wielding a huge gun, and his passive ability is one of the best in the game. When Maugan Ra doesn't move in a turn, his ranged attacks ignore hit reductions from all effects, and he has an added critical damage chance.

His normal ability is good too. Maugan Ra can unleash a flurry of deadly accurate shuriken, which deal heavy round damage to each adjacent enemy. Extra hits are added if Maugan Ra hasn't moved. Players can use Maugan Ra as a tank unit, position him in a solid place in the battlefield and use his abilities to unleash some incredible damage.

4 Re'vas

re'vas warhammer 40k tacticus

Re'vas is an uncommon unit of the Tau faction, meaning she can be easily unlocked and is an overall great character. Re'vas' ability summons two Tau shield drones in the free hexes around her, which can immediately perform a melee attack. Using this ability also causes Re'vas to start overwatching, meaning she can attack any enemy units that move near her within the next turn.

If players upgrade her ability, the shield drones can become almost unstoppable as their stats increase. Her other ability, Cyclic Ion Blaster, deals high damage, especially to targets who have a markerlight over their heads. If players use Re'vas with the right combination of other summoning characters, an unstoppable force can wreak havoc.

3 Bellator

Bellator warhammer 40k tacticus

Surprisingly, one of the best characters in Warhammer 40k: Tacticus is one that can be used from the beginning of the game. Bellator is an ultramarine unit who can summon any number of clones around an enemy, provided all spaces surrounding that unit are free. These clones attack enemies at the start of each turn, giving the player up to five more friendly units. The downside is that he can only summon one clone per number of turns that have passed in the battle.

The meta in Tacticus has a strong focus on summoning, which is part of what makes Bellator so strong. However, his stats are impressive too. He's got a high base health and his armor is resistant to a lot of attacks. In combination with the amount of clones he can summon, Bellator can be a difficult unit to take down. Opposing players will want to try and dispatch him before he can use his ability.

2 Celestine

celestine warhammer 40k tacticus

Another member of the Adepta Sororitas, "Living Saint," Celestine is a powerful Legendary character. As a passive ability, when Celestine is attacked, she summons a Geminae Superia, which is effectively a holographic clone of Celestine. This clone absorbs the damage that Celestine was supposed to receive, and she can summon this clone twice per game. This means players can only do damage to Celestine on the third time of actually attacking her.

10 Pro Tips For Warhammer 40K You Should Know

Warhammer 40K can be a complex table-top game, but gameplay will go a lot smoother with these pro tips.

She's got high base health, and her melee attacks deal a fair amount of damage. However, it's her damage absorption (and the frustration it creates) which makes her such a great character. Not to mention, her design is exquisitely angelic, with two golden wings spanning across the hexes of the battlefield.

1 Ahriman

ahriman warhammer 40k tacticus

If players use Ahriman of the Thousand Sons faction in combination with a character who deals fire damage, or sets characters alight, their team will become brutally powerful. Ahriman's main ability deals 3x high amounts of psychic damage, which is distributed between all enemies within two hexes. If this skill is upgraded, this attack can be devastating to surrounding units. An extra hit is added for each hex on the battlefield that is on fire.

This becomes useful in combination with his passive ability. When any enemy unit lands on a hex with fire, or takes fire/psychic damage, the damage is increased by at least 30%. Ahriman himself can also set hexes on fire, meaning a lot of bonus damage can be dealt with these abilities.
