While the summer seasons tend to be a bit slower for anime, there are still some incredible shows scheduled to air. Summer 2021 promises some incredible adaptations, original shows, and second seasons that no fan will want to miss.

10 2nd Cour Shows

Epic scenes from Shaman King and My Hero Academia

In Japan, a cour (or quarter) is defined as one of the four major seasons of anime. Several shows that originally appeared in Spring 2021 will be continuing on for a 2nd cour in Summer 2021 with some being major favorites among fans. These include shows like My Hero Academia, To Your Eternity, and Shaman King.

9 Idaten Deities In The Peaceful Generation

A young man diving face first off a cliff

Idaten Deities in the Peaceful Generation is Seimei Kidokoro's first time in the director's chair but with a fantastic studio like MAPPA behind them, this is looking like it will be an incredible series.

The story is set to take place in a world where battle gods no longer exist but the demons they once contained with their power have broken free. It results in an epic battle royale where several summoned gods must use anything from might to political conspiracy to attain victory.

8 Re-Main

A men's water polo team by the pool.

Sports anime are incredibly popular shonen shows that fans have come to love. Re-Main looks to be a bit different, tackling the more obscure sport of water polo over something more mainstream like volleyball or tennis.

This original anime isn't adapted from a book series but was written by Masafumi Nishida — the author of Tiger & Bunny and Tesla Note. With a seasoned storyteller at the helm as director, this should be a fantastic sports story to see unfold.

7 The Case Study Of Vanitas

A black haired man casting a magic spell from a book.

With Tomoyuki Itamura of Hanamonogatri fame set to direct, The Case Study of Vanitas looks like it will be one of the best vampire stories to reach anime viewers in quite some time. This historical fantasy follows the adventures of Noé as he attempts to find the Book of Vanitas — a grimoire that legends say will bring an end to all of vampire kind. Any fans of the supernatural should make sure not to miss out on this one.

6 The Honor Student At Magic High School

A young girl at a girl for magic.

The Irregular at Magic High School was incredibly popular when it first came out so it's no surprise this adaptation has anime fans intrigued. The Honor Student at Magic High School tells the same story as the previous show but through the eyes of a new protagonist — Tetsuya's sister Miyuki.

What makes this show fascinating is that it's not necessary to watch the original before tuning in so it's likely to draw in a lot of new fans who will, in turn, seek out the older show.

5 Aquatope Of White Sand

Aquatope Of White Sand

An emotional slice-of-life show about working at an aquarium already makes Aquatope of White Sand an exciting prospect. Add in the fact that it's being directed by Toshiya Shinohara, the director of Black Butler and many Inu Yasha movies, and the show is bound to be a serious hit. Previews of the show have already shown the animation looks gorgeous which is just icing on the cake.

4 Hamefura, My Next Life As A Villainess: All Routes Lead To Doom! Season 2

A group of fancy students at a ball in full gowns and suits.

The original season of Hamefura presented a unique premise — a character in an isekai'd to a video game they have played before but as the main villain who can become an outcast or be downright killed depending on the playthrough. This forces Katarina to try to live her life in a way to avoid all the game flags that send her towards doom.

With the entirety of the original game as Katarina knows it advanced through in season 1, it leaves this latest season with a whole lot of new ground to explore. The uncertainty of her future will be ever-present leading to tough scenarios as she navigates the romantic ties she has with the other characters.

3 Sonny Boy

A man standing alone by a carousel

When the director of One Punch Man gets permission to produce an original anime, it only makes sense that fans should take notice. Sonny Boy looks to be an amazing affair involving thirty-six students who all suddenly develop supernatural powers. Studio Madhouse has kept its cards held close on this show, leaving many open mysteries for its main plot to be speculated on by fans.

2 That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime Season 2 - Part 2

A slime surrounded by various fantasy warriors and creatures.

When the second season of That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime premiered in the Winter 2021 season, fans were already surprised that it would be split into two parts. What was even stranger was that the second part wouldn't appear in the next cour, but instead in the Summer 2021 season.

With fans having to wait all of spring to see more of this well-loved story, loads of people will be tuning it when part two finally premieres.

1 Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid S

Two dragon girls fighting.

With the original season of Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid coming out in 2017, most fans had expected the show to never get a second season after waiting for so long. Its surprise comeback left many western anime fans overjoyed that the story of their favorite slice of life anime was continuing.

Fans who can't wait for more Dragon Maid content should consider checking out the Mini Dragon series as well as the Valentine's Day OVA which are both available to stream free on Crunchyroll.
