Netflix has renewed its partnership with Yeon Sang-ho, the director of the hit South Korean zombie film Train to Busan and the Netflix series Hellbound. Fans now learned that Yeon has been set to develop a new suspense series for Netflix entitled The Bequeathed.

When it was released in 2016, Yeon Sang-ho's horror film Train to Busan became an international sensation and launched the director to star status. He followed this up with the superhero film Psychokinesis, which was distributed globally on Netflix and marked his first time working with the streamer. Following the film's success, Yeon developed the fantasy horror series Hellbound, and recently announced his new show Parasyte: The Grey, both for Netflix.

Netflix has now tripled down on their commitment to Yeon Sang-ho with the announcement of another new series from the acclaimed writer-director, according to Deadline. The Bequeathed will follow Yun Seo-ha, a woman (played by Kim Hyun-joo, Hellbound) who inherits a plot of land from her deceased uncle. When she moves there, however, strange things start happening that hint at a lot of dark secrets in her family's past. Other characters include a police detective (Park Hee-soon, A Model Family) who connects the dots between the strange occurrences in town and Seo-ha's family burial ground; a junior detective (Park Byung-eun, Kingdom); and Seo-ha's troublesome younger brother (Ryu Kyung-soo, Glitch, Broker).

Train to Busan

Yeon Sang-ho will serve as creator and writer for The Bequeathed, while Min Hong-nam, who has been Assistant Director on almost all of Yeon's films, will act as showrunner. The show is described as a suspense drama that focuses on the Korean traditional culture of family burial grounds. Wow Point and RedPeter Films will produce, the latter of which has worked with Yeon on many of his films.

For international fans of South Korean media, Yeon Sang-ho is a big name. He's certainly capitalizing on his recent success and staying quite busy, working on three streaming series at the same time. He served as showrunner and director on every episode in the first season of the hit Netflix show Hellbound, and chances are that he will probably return to do so for the upcoming season 2. On his other new series Parasyte: The Grey, he is again directing and co-writing.

It's a surprise then to hear that he has somehow found time for another new series, though it appears he's taking a bit more of a backseat on this one. Yeon will write The Bequeathed, but will not direct or serve as showrunner. Although he's not involved as directly with this latest show, having his name attached as a writer is still a big deal. For his many loyal fans, the filmmaker has yet to strike out.

The Bequeathed does not yet have a release date but will be available on Netflix.
