Thanks to games like Overwatch, the arena shooter has become very popular, to the point where there's a whole world around the genre. The E-Sport scene has taken off thanks to these types of games. Unlike multiplayer shooters like Call of Duty or Battlefield, these games require more strategy. They don't play like typical shooters, and have limited game modes, but it's how they play that makes these types of games compelling. Objective-based modes make these games very dynamic, because it's a different feeling every time. Plus, they are great for younger players, since they encourage them to play with others.
The newest entry to this genre, Gundam Evolution, takes what makes Overwatch does and puts players in Gundam suits, which makes gameplay over-the-top and very fun. Gundam Evolution has been warmly met by fans and other players, and could very well take Overwatch's 2 spot in the free-to-play shooter category. Though there are similarities between Gundam Evolution and Overwatch, the mech suits do make the game feel different. With that in mind, here are some tips that will help both veteran players and newcomers to the genre.
5 Different Modes Mean Different Gundams
This rule is universal for all multiplayer arena shooters, because not every character can work on both ends of the match. While players should get Gundams who are great in one thing, they should still play with the other Gundams offered. This means they won't be held back with one play style. If players use a Gundam that is good on attack, they can help push the team to get a waypoint or the objective faster. Meanwhile, if players choose one that's good on defense, holding a position will be easier.
The great thing about Gundam Evolution is that it encourages players to adapt to different play styles, since the course of the match can change in a split second, forcing players to use a different mech suit. If a player uses a tank, for example, it can be great for many things, and depending on the tank Gundam, the match may change in difficulty. Picking a suitable Gundam can help the player and the team at the same time.
4 Communication
Being able to relay important information to one's team can make Gundam Evolution way more immersive. When the team members talk to one another, everyone can be on the same page, making the match go smoother. This way, players can know what's going on at all times.
Gundam Evolution does have the communication features that Overwatch does. Players don't have to talk, they can just use the dial to tell the group up or ping a point that every member can see. This makes communication even more robust, because the game gives players options on how to talk, even if not every player has a microphone. This makes it easier for players to see what's going on, because it's all visually there.
3 Use All The Gundams
As mentioned before, different maps call for different Gundams, and it can make a world of difference when they do. As soon as players understand the inner workings of the Gundams, knowing how they behave will make players a threat. Even though Gundam Evolution lacks another support and healing-focused gameplay, if players get through all the mech, it won't matter as much.
As mentioned before, players will understand the strengths and the weaknesses of each Gundam, allowing them to adapt to situations effectively. Plus, it's always a good idea for players to try out each Gundam at least once. Also, much like other Gundam games like SD Gundam Battle Alliance, each suit has an ultimate ability. And just like in that game, knowing how all ultimates work helps players. Using them wrong may cause a chain reaction, forcing the team to take the loss.
2 Learn The Maps
Once players learn all the maps, things get very easy. Even though there are not that many maps currently in the game, players can still make the most of them depending on the mode. When they're on the attack, players can use this knowledge to sneak past enemies, causing the enemy the run to them, allowing the player's team to move up easily. It can be used for strategy when they learn the map. On top of that, there many Gundams in Gundam Evolution are easy to play, which makes it easier to navigate. Just like in Overwatch, which features a ton of heroes that are easy to learn, they will help players understand the maps in the game.
When players can memorize the maps and head straight for any place that gives them an edge, they can overwhelm the enemy team. As mentioned before, knowing the maps can be good for many reasons, like giving the team a strategy. This way they won't run into a point or an enemy zone, and won't get killed easily.
1 Use Shields
This tip is rather important, but only for players that can use shields. Not every Gundam has shields, which can make them somewhat easier to down. But for the ones that do, the combat in Gundam Evolution becomes a little more fun and more aggressive. The normal Gundam that is already unlocked has a shield; however, it's an ability. Players should strategize when they use it since the cool-down time is somewhat long. But when players activate their shields at the right time, they can become a threat, with a fighting chance.
However, unlike the Gundam suit, GM and Sazabi both have shields that can be used any time. They also have no cool-down time, since they're not abilities. This allows them to be more upfront on the team since they can push. When their shields get destroyed, players can fall back for a few seconds, wait for it to charge back up, and go back into the fight. This way, they can fight back more fluidly, and make the enemy stay away because of the shield.
