Gris is an adventure/platforming game, and is widely praised by many players. The game focuses on a young girl named Gris, who is struggling with a painful experience in her life and must learn to work through her grief and sorrow in order to truly heal.

Many players are going to instantly take to the game and its intricacies. After all, Gris is meant to be enjoyed by anyone, regardless of where they come from or what language they speak. However, there are some players who may need some beginner tips to get started. Here's what players should keep in mind as they enter the world of this beautiful game.

7 Look Out For The Five Stages of Grief

Gris - Running

Seeing as Gris is a game about learning how to work through grief, a player should keep an eye out for the proverbial five stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and finally acceptance The game is very story based, so the way in which it portrays that grief can be rather subtle to the untrained eye.

Essentially, the five stages of grief are used to advance through the story. If a player does not experience the stages, they will not really be able to complete the story. A player will need to wander to unlock each experience of Grief, work through it, and progress.

6 Interact With Everything

Gris - Towers

A large part of exploring Gris lies in all the worldbuilding that players experience with practically no text. As such, if a player wants to learn more and get the full story, they are going to want to touch and explore everything they can.

There are a lot of things a player can interact with in Gris. As such, a player should feel free to touch and interact with everything they can. This can be done by simply walking up to the object and pressing the button mapped to interacting. Don't rush — take the time to explore, even if certain objects don't seem important at first glance.

5 Get Those Mementos

Gris - Hands

Something that players may not realize at first is that in Gris, there are multiple Mementos that players are free to collect while exploring the vast and beautiful world. These Mementos are, essentially, used to unlock the true ending of the game, and symbolize things such as lost memories.

These Mementos will be scattered throughout the world of Gris, and it is up to the player to find them. They are strange symbols that are placed in partially hidden areas of the game, so it is up to the player to keep an eye out. Wander through unfamiliar areas to find Mementos in every chapter.

4 Avoid the Eel

Gris - Pillars

The eel is a prominent force to watch out for during Chapter 4. This eel is, essentially, meant to represent trauma. It is very difficult for a player to get away from the eel without at least getting hit by one of its attacks.

A lot of players have managed to figure out an easy way to avoid the eel every time — it is simply a matter of frantically button mashing while running away. It mostly comes down to timing and a little bit of luck. Don't panic, but don't get lax with the eel either.

3 Destroy The Statues

Gris - Water

There are statues scattered throughout the world of Gris, which players should know if they want to complete the entire game and gather all the achievements. This is because destroying the statues will give the player an achievement.

Like Mementos, there are many of these strange statues around the world of Gris. If a player wants to get to the true ending, it will do them well to start looking for those statues. They are not going to be simply handed to the player. The statues, along with Mementos, are another reason that exploration is important.

2 Take In The Surroundings

Gris - Standing

One of the main things that Gris highlights is the gorgeous artwork, which is made to portray the five stages of grief without any text. As such, players should take the time to slow down and take in their surroundings, just to appreciate the artwork.

It is also worth noting that taking a moment to look around can actually help with gameplay, as well. There could be a Memento or a statue in plain sight, which a player would not initially see if they rushed through the area.

1 Improve The Timing of Jumps

Gris - Darkness

Seeing as Gris is a platforming game, learning how to time jumps is going to essential if players want to go far. There are multiple platforms that a player will have to get across if they want to progress.

There will be smaller and lower platforms that a player will be able to practice with at the beginning, but jumps will become harsher. There is no easy workaround — it all comes down to luck, patience, and skill.

Gris is available on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Android, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, macOS, Microsoft Windows, Xbox Series X and Series S, and iOS.
