Roguebook is like a card-based RPG combined with an Isekai. For those that don’t know the term, Isekai usually refers to an anime genre wherein the protagonist is sucked into another world. In this case, the two lead heroes, Sharra and Sorocco, are adventuring when they stumble upon a magical book.

Another mysterious character, Naddim who is also trapped in the book, informs the two adventurers that they are in the Faeria Book of Lore. How can they get out? Is there a way out? Players are going to have to jump into Roguebook to find out. Before they do though, these tips and tricks should really help out. Among other things, they cover battle tips, what cards to buy and how the game saves.

8 Upgrading Permanent Power

The Establishments menu is the name of the skill tree-like system in this epic card-based RPG. Players can unlock things that will appear in runs, including the Alchemist, who can upgrade a card to make it stronger. There are also permanent buffs like health upgrades.

Buying these skills requires text pages. The easier way to get them is through the boss of each chapter or the sub-boss. The sub-boss is not that hard and is marked by red daggers. No matter what, on every run, players should always attack the red daggers first.

7 Leveling Up Through Defeat

There is another way to level up characters in Roguebook. Once defeated, the number of kills and other things collected in a run will be tallied up and divided into experience points. Once characters level up, they will unlock a new card to randomly appear for them in a run.

It’s not as good as standard RPG leveling up bonuses. More permanent upgrades would have been better in Roguebook overall. Still, it’s important that players know that even in death there is hope for a better tomorrow.

6 Don’t Forget To Unlock Party Buffs

Finally, there are the party buffs. These will unlock once players defeat and collect enough new cards for their deck. The more thresholds they unlock, the more buffs can be stacked.

These upgrades will be for the current roguelike run only. They also change between games. There are several rows of tiered upgrades, one for each character and then one for a group effort. Once players pick one the rest become inaccessible, so they'll need to choose wisely.

5 Gaining Allies

There are two types of allies in Roguebook and both of them are vital to making headway in the game. First, bosses can turn into allies. After players defeat a chapter’s boss it will become a permanent ally who can replace either Sharra or Sorocco for starters. There are also ally cards.

If one of these cards appears, players should be sure to use it no matter the cost. Their damage, or effect, will remain constant in the battle ahead. A good group of allies can really turn the tide in the player’s favor.

Even though it was suggested to always attack the red daggers before anything else, there is a catch of sorts. The actual first thing that players should do is explore. Drain that ink, but don’t use it haphazardly. A good idea is to use ink toward towers. Once touched, those towers will spread ink freely.

Players should aim to collect gold, buy cards, find items, and then hit the sub-boss once the party is better equipped with gear other than the starting sets. It’s just a good idea to be prepared before a sub-boss, or a big boss for that matter, in any game.

3 Buying Cards

The shop in Roguebook

Two shops will appear in players’ roguelike runs before they upgrade their skill tree. The wisened old Naddim, who is also trapped in this cursed book along with Sharra and Sorocco, will sell cards to the players whenever they want.

Those cards are more expensive. Then there are the blue chests which will present players with three options. Each card will cost 25 gold apiece, but only one can be picked. For starters, it’s a good idea to buy group-based attacks, ally cards, or cards with an energy cost of zero. The aforementioned Alchemist shop further opens up possibilities.

2 Play Defensively

Some players may choose to be more aggressive in their RPGs. A good defense is a good offense, after all. That is usually a sound strategy. However, players aren’t going to get very far in Roguebook with that mentality.

It’s important to utilize defensive cards as well. The best cards are the kinds that attack an enemy and then buff the character afterward. The bottom line is, before ending a turn, players should try to have at least one defensive card in play.

1 Players Can Quit Anytime

Roguebook is always saving whether it’s between finding a chest on the map or defeating an enemy. The chances are, after those examples, the game will be saved. Players can therefore quit a run at any time, practically anywhere.

This is big for a roguelike even though it isn’t uncommon. That said, players should avoid choosing to drop a run in the menu. That will cancel everything out. Instead, they should back out to the title menu and then hit continue once they come back to the game. It’s as simple as that.

Roguebook is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X, and Switch.
