The Beastars anime, based on the manga of the same name, debuted on Netflix in Japan last year on October 8, with the series making its American debut in March of 2020. Recently the wraparound jacket on the 20th volume of the Beastars manga revealed that the second season of the anime adaptation will premiere in January of 2021.

Beastars is a very popular property, with the original serialized manga winning several awards and the anime adaption gathering a large audience of both Japanese and American fans. The American release was received to favorable reviews and excitement from those who had been looking forward to seeing the English dub, which replaces the original Japanese voice acting with English actors for the benefit of Western audiences.

Even for those new to the series, the premise may seem familiar to those who saw Disney's Zootopia, although the similarities are likely a coincidence. Set in a world of anthropomorphic animals, the main setting of Beastars, a high school, is separated into predators and prey. It is the personal relationships between them that maintains a fragile peace. Who among the schoolmates can earn the title of Beastar- a social and academic role model who will be destined to lead a society based on fragile alliances?

The actual plot kicks off with the murder of a herbivore student at Cherryton Academy who is killed and eaten. Members of the drama club naturally turn their sights towards the carnivores among them, with prime suspect being Legoshi, a large wolf. Drama ensues as Legoshi is forced to deal with the investigation, the suspicions of other students, and his own nature.

For those interested in checking out the show, the anime is currently available on Netflix in both its original Japanese voice acting and an English language dub.

Beastars Season 2 will be available on Netflix in January 2021.
