After successfully delving into the past for inspiration and centering the game around the First World War, many fans would argue that Battlefield 1 managed to reinvigorate the franchise by putting a much-requested turn of the century spin on the series. Now, according to a recent report from VentureBeat, it looks as if the next entry in developer DICE and publisher Electronic Arts' first-person shooter property could eschew placing the title in a more modern era of global conflict in favor of a World War II setting this time around.

As reported by VentureBeat's Jeff Grubb, the next Battlefield title is going to be dubbed "Battlefield V", and will return the series to World War II in a main entry for the first time since the release of 2009’s Battlefield 1943. Apparently, this information was given to the outlet from sources familiar with Electronic Arts’ plans for the first-person shooter franchise, with the sources having asked to remain anonymous. A purported screenshot of the dev build for Battlefield V can be seen below.

For those unaware, this isn't the first instance of rumors swirling about the forthcoming Battlefield game potentially having a World War II setting. As it so happens, many initially suspected that DICE and EA would zig when everyone expected the companies to zag by putting out Bad Company 3 this year instead, but one source denied that to be the case, stating the developer and publisher are opting for a World War II setting with the series' 2018 release.

All things considered, with VentureBeat's sources remaining anonymous, it's difficult to confirm the validity of such claims in regards to the next entry in the Battlefield franchise being set during World War II. Nevertheless, should this be the route that DICE and Electronic Arts are taking with the series, the companies have already proven the ability to release a quality product that's inspired by events from the past. That said, though, it begs the question of whether or not Call of Duty: WW2 has already satisfied gamers' desires to return to the Second World War.

The next Battlefield game has yet to be officially announced.
