If there is one thing that fans of the Battlefield series know, it is that complex easter eggs can be expected at some point in each game’s life cycle. Though it remains to be seen when or if the struggling Battlefield 2042 will take part in this trend, the other games in the series have hidden some cool secrets for players to find. Funnily enough, some of the best Easter eggs in the series revolve around dinosaurs, and the Dino mode gag that inspired this trend should become more than a joke.

Whether players are building to the sky to encounter some Pterodactyls or gathering in the ocean to be eaten alive by a massive Megalodon, there is no shortage of Easter eggs based on prehistoric critters to find. With Battlefield’s reputation being tarnished and the competition’s own fantastical co-op mode stumbling, DICE should strike now with a fleshed out Dino mode that aims to get more eyes on the series.

Why Now is The Perfect Storm for Battlefield’s Dino Mode

Battlefield 3 Dinosaur

The reason Dino mode transformed from a simple joke to a running gag is actually tied to Battlefield’s main competitor, Call of Duty. When Battlefield 3 launched, the competition with Activision’s flagship franchise was at its fiercest, with DICE regularly taking some veiled and unveiled shots at its opposition. One of these was jokingly insinuating that Dino mode was coming, which was meant to parody Call of Duty’s Zombies mode. Clearly, some found the concept of fighting the undead in a military shooter absurd, seeking to parody it with the most ridiculous concept imaginable.

Ever since then, the community has constantly asked for this silly idea to become a reality, and DICE has played with the concept through dog tag references and hidden T.Rex roars on certain maps. Despite years of teasing, and dinosaurs essentially becoming a staple of the Battlefield franchise’s Easter egg hunts, a proper Dino mode has never actually come to a Battlefield game. However, that should change.

Whether it comes as part of a big season update for Battlefield 2042, or as a key part of a new game in the series, Dino mode could be exactly what the franchise needs right now. It is no secret that Battlefield has been struggling, with the glory days of Battlefield 3 and Bad Company 2 fading away and the struggles of more recent entries dominating discussion. Delivering a ridiculous experience like Dino mode could instantly get some new players interested in the series, with lapsed players returning to check it out after being teased for years.

Assuming that Dino mode were to have a co-op focus, it would also give DICE another way to compete with Call of Duty, directly challenging the Zombies mode that served as an inspiration for the idea. Call of Duty Zombies is at its lowest point ever following the deeply flawed version of the mode seen in Call of Duty: Vanguard. As such, now is the best possible time for DICE to enter the “absurd co-op mode in a military FPS" scene, as it is not in danger of being overshadowed.

If a Battlefield game releases that provides the style of multiplayer gamers want, while also delivering an ambitious and long awaited mode focused on Dinosaurs, it could be big enough to get the franchise back on the map. Battling a T-Rex in a tank sounds like a ton of fun, and with Megalodons patrolling the sea while Pterodactyls fly in the air, a number of unforgettable encounters can be had. With games like Exoprimal showing the appeal of battles with raptors and other prehistoric beasts, DICE should consider making Battlefield’s fabled Dino mode more than a meme.
