For many, Battlefield 3 remains the best game in the series, as the game mastered the modern setting and featured some of the best maps in the franchise. As such, it is hard to blame fans for being excited over the Battlefield 3 remaster rumors from last year — though it seems like the hopes of an updated version have been shot down.

Though Battlefield 6 will supposedly take place in World War 3, bringing players back to a modern setting, it seems that this is the closest players will get to a modernized Battlefield 3. While the original leak from YouTuber Daqarie seemed promising when it released, it has since been taken down, seemingly by Daqarie himself. While this would normally be a bad sign, one of the industry’s most reputable leakers Tom Henderson has shared even more proof against a remaster.

According to Henderson, there is no weight whatsoever behind the Battlefield 3 remaster rumors that started last year. Checking with several of his own sources, Henderson not only found that there is no concrete info on a Battlefield 3 remaster of any kind, but that the leaker Daqarie’s previous source was a former QA tester at EA. With the tester no longer working for the company, though, the information cannot be trusted. Further, while Henderson has personally heard nothing about Battlefield 3, he makes another strong point against the idea.

Per Henderson, releasing Battlefield 6 and Battlefield 3 at the same time makes little sense for EA financially. The leaker points out that both games are set in the time period, something that makes the rumors seem even more inaccurate. In his video on the topic, Henderson points out a similar scenario with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered and Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare's release, sharing that the difference was the games’ respective settings. With one game set in the future and one set in modern day, the dual release did not split the player base as much as this doubled-up Battlefield drop would.

This is certainly unfortunate news for old school Battlefield fans that wanted to see their favorite game remastered, though not all hope is lost. Battlefield 6 will supposedly take inspiration from Battlefield 3 and its map design, meaning that memorable experiences like the dive off Damavand Peak and the clashes on Operation Metro could be happening once again. Further, if inspiration is taken from Battlefield 3, perhaps more effort will be put into making memorable experiences for the Rush game mode.

Even with Battlefield 6 sounding so promising, though, Henderson shutting down the Battlefield 3 remaster rumors will surely be disappointing to many. For now, and for the foreseeable future, players will just have to continue to play the original Battlefield 3.

Battlefield 3 is available now on PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360.
