Highlights

  • Recent updates have improved Battlefield 2042 and addressed long-standing criticisms, making the game more reflective of past multiplayer experiences.
  • Season 7 is expected to launch in March with little information available, but it's likely to follow the successful formula of recent seasons. However, it could instead focus on enhancing the underused Portal mode.
  • Fans have responded positively to the Redacted map introduced in Season 6, which offers a more intimate gameplay experience. There are calls for similar smaller maps, and past Battlefield maps like Operation Metro and Locker could be worth reviving to provide this content.

The recent in-game seasons of Battlefield 2042 have been very well-received by the game's community, doing well to negate a lot of the longstanding criticisms it has faced ever since its launch. Following these updates, the title has become much more reflective of the multiplayer experiences of past games, and there is no reason for this not to continue in the upcoming Season 7.

Season 7 of Battlefield 2042 is expected to launch in March, with little to no details currently being available about the in-game event. With that being said, it seems logical that Season 7 will try and emulate the content of recent successful seasons, and it may be better for the title to look to the past of the franchise to bolster other gameplay elements like the underused Portal mode of the game.

Past Maps Could Revitalize Portal in Battlefield 2042's Season 7

Battlefield Bad Company 2 Vietnam Gameplay

Recent months have been very productive for the DICE's latest game, with smart updates and free-to-play weekends seeing Battlefield 2042 break its all-time player-counts. October's Season 6 was a real highlight for the release, introducing the following content to the game:

  • New Redacted map
  • New weapons: VHX-D3 AR, the L9CZ Sidearm, and the G428 DMR.
  • Throwable Ammo and Medical Pouches
  • New Battle Pass

The Redacted map was a standout feature of Season 6, finally bringing a more intimate map to Battlefield 2042 that many fans felt had been sorely missing. Redacted does away with the many vehicles of larger Battlefield experiences, making players rely on ground combat in tight hallways, creating a much more tense and action-packed level of gameplay.

Fans are already calling for more experiences similar to Redacted, and the upcoming Battlefield 2042 Season 7 should capitalize on this while players are still engaged. While creating brand-new small maps would be welcomed by fans, it may encroach on the current success of Redacted, so shaking things up with a large map could be beneficial. However, DICE may also be able to provide close quarters maps at the same time as a new large map using one feature: Portal.

Operation Metro and Locker Could Be the Key to Battlefield 2042's Season 7

Battlefield 2042's Portal mode allows players to create time-bending experiences using assets from a variety of past Battlefield games, yet its post-launch support has been considered underwhelming. The longstanding controversies around Battlefield 2042 may have played a large factor in the lack of attention that Portal has received, but there is still time for DICE to salvage the mode by giving it more attention in future seasonal updates.

DICE has been vocal about the inspiration behind Redacted, stating how past Battlefield maps like Operation Metro and Locker were the blueprint for the new smaller-scale experience. Metro and Locker came from Battlefield 3 and 4 respectively, but are currently being absent from Portal's usable assets to the disappointment of many fans. If Metro and Locker were added to Battlefield 2042 with Season 7, then DICE could smartly kill two birds with one stone by bolstering Portal while building on the success of recent maps like Redacted.
