  • The Battlefield series is in a tough spot due to recent disappointments, with potential turnaround in 2025 release and return to roots gameplay.
  • The next Battlefield game is rumored to feature classic gameplay elements and present-day setting, possibly launching with a free-to-play battle royale mode.
  • Uncertainty surrounds the next Battlefield title, with leaks pointing to 2025 release window and possible gameplay changes for revitalization.

The Battlefield franchise is in potentially the worst position it's ever been in. While the Battlefield series had seen a handful of misses over the years, EA wasn't quite prepared for the one-two-punch of Battlefield V and Battlefield 2042. Though the former still sold quite well, its initial reception did hurt the Battlefield brand quite significantly, and of course, Battlefield 2042 only served to make things much worse, being both a critical and commercial disappointment.

Once a flagship franchise for EA, Battlefield has fallen from grace and no longer holds power over the FPS space as it once did. Still, there's hope that it can pull things back around. Virtually no official details are currently known about the next Battlefield game. There's no official release window, no official reveal, and no official title. The only things fans officially know for sure is that DICE is working on the game's multiplayer alongside Ripple Effect, and Criterion is now heading up Battlefield's single-player after the recent closure of Ridgeline. But while that's all fans officially know, there have been a number of leaks and rumors recently, the most glaring of which points to a potential 2025 release window.

The Next Battlefield Could Drop in 2025

The first rumblings about the next Battlefield game began in January, thanks to a report by Insider Gaming's David Coulson. A breakdown of the recent EA earnings report, Insider Gaming's report mentioned that a new Battlefield game probably won't be coming this year as EA and DICE still seem focused on producing more Battlefield 2042 content, especially after its recent resurgence.

Instead, the next Battlefield title will likely drop in the Autumn of 2025, at least according to Insider Gaming's report and some light teases from Stuart Canfield, the Chief Financial Officer and Executive Vice President of EA. Of course, all leaks and rumors mentioned here should be taken with a hefty pinch of salt, and that's especially true for this one, with very little actual evidence to back it up.

That being said, Insider Gaming's Tom Henderson—a renowned source of leaked gaming information—has also corroborated this theory, claiming on Twitter that the next Battlefield is targeting an October or November 2025 release date. That said, even if true, this could easily get pushed to 2026 if the developer needs more time.

The Next Battlefield Might Be Taking The Series Back to its Roots

On February 27, 2024, Insider Gaming posted another Battlefield-related report, this one containing alleged details about its actual gameplay. According to Tom Henderson, the next Battlefield is taking a "back to its roots approach," which could apparently signal the return of some franchise staple features. Some of these features apparently include a return to 64-player lobbies, a four-class system, and an overhauled destruction system. Henderson's report also mentions that the next Battlefield will likely be set during the present day, apparently sometime between 2025 and 2030, where modern technology's role in war will play a major part in the game's story.

The Next Battlefield Could Launch Alongside a Battle Royale

In the same February 27 report, Insider Gaming's Tom Henderson also claimed that the next Battlefield will launch alongside a standalone battle royale mode. Apparently following in the footsteps of Call of Duty: Warzone, this Battlefield battle royale mode will be completely free to play and launch separately from the mainline Battlefield entry. Henderson also mentioned that this Battlefield battle royale currently has two different game modes, with the first being a standard battle royale mode, and the second being an objective-based mode called "Gauntlet," which will see the lowest-scoring players get knocked out of the match.
