Batman casting news is what fans are hoping for since James Gunn has found his Superman. Unfortunately, fans may have to wait a while to see who will don the pointy-eared cowl.
Fans have speculated about who will take over as Batman and Superman in Gunn's DCU since the announcement that Gunn was taking over DC Studios and restarting the canon. The speculation about Batman specifically took off after the announcement that Gunn would introduce him in a movie titled The Brave and the Bold, which refers to the comics it will draw inspiration from. Since those stories utilize a slightly older Batman, fans speculate that while a new face is possible, an actor who previously portrayed Batman could return for Gunn's movie.
After months of shutting down casting rumors, Gunn confirmed on Instagram that David Corenswet had been cast as Clark Kent/Superman in Superman: Legacy. While the Superman casting choice was the focus of his post, he revealed a little more news in the comments. User dabroni57 commented, “How close are we to a casting for Batman?” In response, Gunn said, “Miles and miles away.”
While this answer may be unsatisfying for anxious fans, it's similar to how Gunn has been handling casting questions. When discussing the process for casting Superman, Gunn was adamant that the casting process wouldn’t even begin until the script for the movie was complete. Additionally, Gunn was clear that while he had actors in mind throughout the casting process, he wouldn't entertain rumors of who was or wasn’t in the movie until official decisions were made.
With “miles and miles” to go before Batman is even cast, Batman fans have a long wait ahead. A production start date or release date was not announced. However, fans know the film will be part of the DCU's first phase of movies - called Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters - and will be directed by The Flash's Andy Muschietti. Like the comics it’s based on, The Brave and the Bold will feature an older Batman teaming up with Damian Wayne, the son of Bruce Wayne and Talia al Ghul, whose existence was unknown to Bruce Wayne for the first ten years of Damian's life.
So, while Gunn's words make it seems like fans will have to wait an eternity to find out who will play the Caped Crusader, the fact that The Brave and the Bold is still part of the first wave of DC movies does mean the news should come sooner rather than later.
