Modern superhero films like Black Panther and Aquaman exemplify outstanding uses of music on many occasions, and it makes sense that the straight-to-streaming counterparts of their various mega-franchises would continue that trend. So it may be no surprise that music writer Natalie Holt, the composer of Disney's fan-favorite Loki series from Disney Plus, has been hired to provide the score for HBO Max's Batgirl film.

British musician Holt has been scoring various film and television series since 2005. Her vast resume of credits includes Woman in Gold, Journey's End, and a BBC adaptation of Charles Dickens's Great Expectations. She's even earned an Emmy nomination for her music in Victoria, a series about the early life of Queen Victoria. Her biggest credit, however, is undoubtedly for her work as the music composer of Marvel Studios' Loki, with her musical contribution widely regarded as one of the best parts of the show. Before Batgirl, her only upcoming credit following Loki had been for the movie Fever Dream, which comes to Netflix this October.

That changed faster than expected, though, as Warner Bros. has evidently hired her for their HBO Max Batgirl film. Holt confirmed her role by tweeting early on Thursday morning, stating that she's just now allowed to reveal that she is composing the film. Holt is the most recent attachment to the film aside from In The Heights star Leslie Grace, Bad Boys for Life directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, and Bumblebee screenwriter Christina Hodson. Additionally, rumors have recently circulated that Bane might appear in the film, calling to mind Dave Bautista's desire to play that villain.

Holt's hiring as the composer of Batgirl follows a trend of increased visibility for female score composers in Hollywood and beyond. Hildur Guðnadóttir is an obvious example, having won an Oscar for her groundbreaking score of Joker, in addition to being hired to compose music for Electronic Arts' upcoming Battlefield 2042. Other female composers making waves through the entertainment industry include Mica Levi (Under the Skin), Lesley Barber (Manchester by the Sea), Anne Dudley (Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again), and Anna Calvi (Peaky Blinders).

This development will surely please Loki fans who enjoyed the music of that series. Holt is obviously an exciting up-and-comer in the industry and is sure to bring her expertise from a fruitful career to Batgirl. It's safe to say that fans have a lot to look forward to.

Batgirl is expected to be released in 2022–2023.
