Academy Award-winning actor J.K. Simmons was spotted on set in Glasgow reprising his role as Gotham Police Commissioner James Gordon in the upcoming HBO Max Batgirl movie. Late last year, Simmons confirmed that Warner Bros. came back to him, wanting him to be Commissioner Gordon again and have it be a more significant role.Simmons said he was shocked with his casting in Batgirl, undoubtedly because the last time he was seen as Commissioner Gordon was in Zack Snyder's Justice League with a role smaller than fans were expecting. And furthermore, after that, it seemed that Warner Bros. was shifting away from Snyder's vision, so Batman fans were glad to see Simmons back as Commissioner Gordon and finally see exactly what he could bring to the table.RELATED: First Look At Michael Keaton's Classic Batman Suit In 'The Flash' FilmIn Batgirl set photos, courtesy of Daily Mail, fan-favorite Simmons was seen donning Commissioner Gordon's classic outfit of trench coat and black trilby hat. The scene being filmed seemed like a flashback sequence with a child actress who bore striking resemblance to Leslie Grace, suggesting she's playing a younger Barbara Gordon. Simmons was also seen in one photo with an actress who is presumably playing Barbara's mother.

With the return of Simmons, however, fans shouldn't necessarily expect a complete return to Snyder's initial vision of the DCEU. It's worth noting that Michael Keaton is returning as Batman in Batgirl, so fans should expect more than just another run-of-the-mill origin story. The rest of the plot details are kept under wraps and Warner Bros. refused to comment on Keaton's casting. It's been more than 30 years since Keaton first donned the cowl, and he said he's intrigued by the prospect of revisiting the character.

Fans should be excited to finally see a live-action Commissioner Gordon who extends beyond his Batman relationship to one with Batgirl, who in the comics is the alter-ego of his daughter Barbara Gordon. Filming on Batgirl is still ongoing.

Batgirl's other confirmed cast members include Rebecca Front, Corey Johnson, Ethan Kai, and Ivory Aquino also joined the cast during filming as Alysia Yeoh, the first major transgender character in a DC film. The film is being directed by Bad Boys 3 duo Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah.

Batgirl is scheduled to be released in 2022 on HBO Max.
