Best Modern-Day CRPGs, Ranked

CRPG was once thought to be a dead genre, but games like Disco Elysium & Divinity Original Sin resurrected it. Here are the best modern ones.

Although Larian CEO Sven Vicke has officially announced that his team won't be doing any sequels or DLCs, BG3 will still be updated and bug-fixed regularly, which means even more cool stuff players should never sell. Like any other role-playing game, one's character is likely to find plenty of valuables and other items that will clutter their inventory.

Updated April 22, 2024 by Kristy Ambrose: One Tav's junk is another Durge's treasure, so it's ultimately up to the player as to what goes to the vendor and what stays in storage. Some of these things are useful, but sometimes even the most random, weird stuff can have sentimental value.

Role-playing has a lot of influence as to what a character keeps or sells, which can guide a player when they're cleaning out the inventory or Camp storage. When players have made their way to a merchant after a hard day of slaying and smashing, these are just some of the things a player should never sell in Baldur's Gate 3.

1 Camp Supplies

Needed For Long Rests

A Pork Loin in Baldur's Gate 3
  • Where To Find: Backpacks, kitchens, crates, and barrels, or bought from several vendors

BG3 requires the player to take short or long rests once in a while. Spellcasters restore the spell slots they have used, while all the classes restore their abilities and max out their hit points. However, these long rests come at a price because the player must have enough camp supplies to equal forty, and some food items are worth more than others.

Find camp supply resources or collect various bits of food and bottles of wine, beer, and other spirits. Players should always be collecting food while they are adventuring even if it's only a couple of carrots found on the side of the road. Yes, they do take up space and weight in the player's inventory but fans can always send them directly to camp instead of carrying them.

2 "Orange" Items

Often Connected To Quests Or Important NPCs

  • Where To Find: Locations related to quests or important locations, often in obscure, cursed, or disgusting places

These aren't gear or weapons of a Legendary quality, but important items like books, jars, or bits of jewelry, that are required for a quest. However, their importance isn't always clear when they're found or picked up, so they have an orange border that signals to the player that this is something they should keep as opposed to selling.

One example is the canopic jars that hold the remains of the mummy lord, Mystic Carrion. The player might find these in the Ancient Crypt before stumbling across the quest to either aid or destroy the mummy.

Even if they're described in a general way, the jars will be orange so that the player knows they're important. Other items in a similar vein include the Amulet of Bhaal and the Necromancy of Thay book.

3 Thieves' Tools

Useful Even If You're Not A Rogue

  • Where To Find: Random chests and crates, more likely in dungeons, thieves' hideouts, or from vendors

The Bard and Rogue are the two classes that automatically have Sleight of Hand proficiency, but any character can get it through multi-classing or choosing certain Feats. Depending on a character's Dexterity, any character can try to pick a lock on a chest or door provided they have Thieves' Tools.

The best Rogue build in BG3 takes the Thief subclass to new heights by allowing more Sneak Attack and Offhand opportunities.

Without the Thieves' Tools, even a Rogue with a maxed-out Dexterity can't pick a lock with their bare fingers. There's always the option of smashing the lock or using a Knock spell if there is one, but having some tools handy is better than wasting a spell slot.

4 Trap Disarm Toolkit

Better Than Finding Them The Hard Way

  • Where To Find: Random chests and crates, more likely in dungeons, thieves' hideouts, next to Thieves' Tools, or from vendors

Characters need a high Perception to find traps before they can be disarmed. That can be difficult if a character has a low Wisdom score or is afflicted with certain conditions like Paid the Price, but hopefully, the Cleric or Druid can handle it if the Rogue can't.

If players can find the traps without setting them off, it's possible to avoid them but much better to disarm them. This requires a Trap Disarm Toolkit and Sleight of Hand Proficiency, and if players fail the first attempt, having multiple toolkits allows for another try.

5 Jugs

Small Vases For Camp Decor

  • Where To Find: Often indoors, in buildings that have kitchens, bedrooms, and dining spaces

The difference between jugs and vases in BG3 is that jugs are small enough for a player to pick up and carry with them. Jugs are smaller than vases, often elaborately decorated, and are distinctly decorated, making them different from the larger bits of crockery that litter the game.

Jugs aren't useful in the sense that they can't be used to store anything, but they're often worth a few pieces of gold each should players decide to sell them. For those who want some pottery or ceramics in camp, there's a wide variety of decorative jugs that they can haul back from the day's adventures. They can't be used for storage, but do make decent projectiles.

6 Elemental Arrows

Handy For Taking Down A Variety Of Enemies

An Arrow of Acid in Baldur's Gate 3
  • Where To Find: Chests, crates, vaults, often drops from enemies, can be purchased from certain vendors

Rangers and any other class that are proficient in longbows, short bows, or crossbows don't need to worry about purchasing arrows or creating their own as they are an infinite resource. However, besides the regular arrows, players can also get their hands on the occasional arrow that comes with special effects. They include elemental damage like acid or fire along with more specific effects like silence, transposition, or thunder damage.

Why You Should Romance Lae'zel in Baldur's Gate 3

Lae'zel in Baldur's Gate 3 has one of the toughest personalities in the cast but is perfect for anyone into dominant individuals.

The players' opponents will not go easy on them as they will also make the most of these special arrows, so a player should never sell this item if they hope to be on a level playing field with their enemies. Players may also be interested in buying more from merchants though they are easy to find on the corpses of enemies.

7 High-Level Spell Scrolls

Handy When Those Spell Slots Run Out

A Scroll of Blur in Baldur's Gate 3
  • Where To Find: Shelves, desks, chests, sometimes dropping from enemies

Magic Scrolls give players the freedom to cast spells even if the class they are playing has no connection to the Weave. Baldur's Gate 3 is sure to supply the player with a few spell scrolls of Rare or Very Rare quality. Battles will force players to use everything they've got, and therefore they will be grateful when they remember they didn't sell that scroll that came in handy.

There are some exceptions to this rule of never selling magic scrolls. If a player has a spellcaster on their team that already knows that spell, then it's fine to sell any duplicate scrolls they find. Players are less likely to be casting the same spell several times, though if it's a useful spell it may be better to keep it.

8 Stuffed Animals

Either Keep Them Or Give Them To Karlach

  • Where To Find: Private homes, shops, and taverns, anywhere players find children or toys

Everyone's favorite Tiefling Barbarian loves animals, even of the stuffed variety, and it's one of those unlikely things fans can find in Baldur's Gate 3, so players like to collect them. There are a few bears, of course, but there are also owlbears and other fun and cute forms.

It's more fun to stockpile stuffed animals in Act 3, when the party can stay at the Elfsong Tavern and there's a bed to put them on. Another option is to give them to Karlach. She has a teddy bear named Clive resting at her corner of the campsite, which has given rise to the belief in the fandom that she likes stuffed animals.

9 Scrolls Of Revivify

Essential For Survival, Literally

A Scroll of Revivify in Baldur's Gate 3
  • Where To Find: Every player and companion has at least one when the game begins. They can also be looted from high-level enemies, found in vaults and locked chests, and purchased from a few vendors

Scrolls of Revivify are incredibly valuable, they cost a lot to purchase from merchants and can also be sold for an equally impressive amount. However, this item should never be sold no matter how desperate a player is for gold. Scrolls of Revivify give players a quick way to bring a companion back from the dead without having to spend more money back at camp to buy the aid of Withers.

Of all the skills in Baldur's Gate 3, which proficiencies will serve the player character best?

No matter what difficulty a player enjoys Baldur's Gate 3 on, they are likely to face an unlucky moment where an opponent shoves their character off the map or dies in a tragic poisonous cloud explosion. Having a scroll on standby will be crucial to get this companion back on its feet if players don't have the spell instead.

10 Soul Coins

Save Them For The Infernal Engine

madrugada holding a soul coin bg3
  • Where To Find: Acquired in various places throughout the game, but often found in crypts, places related to blacksmithing, or given as a quest reward

The first Soul Coin that most players find is given as a reward for helping a Tiefling avoid a Bugbear sneak attack near the gate to the Druid Grove. There are a few in the Dank Crypt, in case they miss this one and several others that appear in various locations depending on the path the story takes.

The Soul Coins have other uses other than being used as currency in the Nine Hells. They can be used to power Karlach's Infernal Engine and give her a buff called Infernal Fury, but it only lasts a day, so spent the coins wisely.

11 Empty Bags

Useful For Storage And Organization

random junk inventory bg3
  • Where To Find: in a variety of locations, often near campsites, houses, or offices

These handy containers are used by many players to organize their vast inventory, which doesn't seem important at first, but by the time players get to the end of Act 1 the character's items start to fill up their backpacks. Even the clothing chest at camp starts to get a little crowded, and that's only handy for gear or items that won't be used in battle.

For those who need to stockpile items like scrolls, potions, and arrows in their everyday inventory, things get cluttered fast. A small selection of bags, pouches, or backpacks isn't just useful in this situation, it's essential.

12 Poisons

Throw Them, Drink Them, Put Them On Weapons

how to get poison in baldurs gate 3
  • Where To Find: cellars, Apothecary shelves, any location connected to medicine or crime, bookshelves, locked chests, or crafted by the player

It's not just the bottles of poison that fans can find everywhere, but also the hidden recipes that turn up in certain locations throughout the game. Checking the books, papers, and scrolls in a secret or obscure location often reveals a new recipe for the character's Alchemy tab.

Players can also make poisons aside from finding them, and Wizards of the Transmutation School have a chance to make twice as many with a handy passive feature, so they can clutter up bag space fast. This is when the protagonist can consider unloading a few, but otherwise, they're too useful to sell.

13 Potions

Sell Some And Keep Others

A Potion of Healing in Baldur's Gate 3
  • Where To Find: various locations that include offices, bookshelves, locked chests, or crafted by the player

Out of all the things cluttering a player's inventory, the one group of items a player should never sell must be potions. While it may be convincing to get rid of some of these glass bottles, healing potions are crucial in tight moments; players only need a bonus action to consume them and plenty of the other potions can give them a boost.

A BG3 adventurer needs to check their rucksack and share the potions and poisons with their party members. Some may help the player succeed on certain rolls or even fulfill the purpose of some spells.

Remembering to use them and not hoarding the supplies will keep the number of potions under control so that a player never feels as if they have more alchemy bottles than Auntie Ethel. When crafting, remember that any potions the character makes through the Alchemy tab will appear in their inventory.
