The Silent Library is a room within Baldur's Gate 3's Gauntlet of Shar that is home to a puzzle. This puzzle centers a pedestal called "Riddle of the Night," which poses a question: "What can silence the Nightsong?" This guide contains details on how to answer that question, and it will help players solve the Riddle of the Night puzzle in Baldur's Gate 3's Silent Library.

Updated October 15th, 2023: Players who attempt to complete the Gauntlet of Shar may find themselves a bit confused when they enter the Silent Library. After making it through some enemies, players will enter through a locked gate and be presented with a puzzle that asks, "What can silence the Nightsong?" The answer to this puzzle is a bit ambiguous but players who know what to look for can make it through it pretty quickly. In order to help players with how to silence the Nightsong in Baldur's Gate 3, the following guide has been updated with a video.

Baldur's Gate 3: What Can Silence the Nightsong

In order to solve the Riddle of the Night puzzle, Baldur's Gate 3 players must get their hands on a book that is found within the Silent Library. Specifically, that book is called "Teachings of Loss: The Nightsinger," and fans can collect it from the bookshelf at coordinates X:-771 Y:-742. Notably, this shelf is trapped initially, and it is disarmed by succeeding a Dexterity Check with a Difficulty Class of 14.

After collecting the relevant book, players should pass through the metal gate on the west side of the Silent Library. While it is expected that almost all readers will have already lowered that gate, players that have not should simply interact with the button on the pillar at coordinates X:-781 Y:-750. Fans should then interact with the Riddle of the Night pedestal and insert the Teachings of Loss: The Nightsinger book into it to solve the puzzle and cause the western wall to open.

Beyond that opening, players will find a small room, and the Spear of Night sits on an altar within it. While this weapon may not seem particularly remarkable upon first glance, fans may find a use for it as they continue to work through Baldur's Gate 3's Gauntlet of Shar.

The Spear of Night is not the only item that players can collect from the secret room within the Silent Library, though. Indeed, the Dark Justiciar Half-Plate is on the ground at the base of the altar, and the Dark Justiciar Helmet is in the Gilded Chest that is against the west wall. While these may not be the best armor pieces in Baldur's Gate 3, they can still act as nice upgrades at this point in the game.

Once a player has finished their time in the Silent Library, they should feel free to continue exploring the Gauntlet of Shar. This might mean attempting to complete the Faith-Leap Trial or even taking on Yurgir in Baldur's Gate 3. Regardless of exactly what fans decide to do next, their goal should be to collect the four Umbral Gems that are scattered throughout the dungeon.

Baldur's Gate 3 is available now on PC. A PS5 version releases on September 6.
