One Baldur's Gate 3 player found an inventive way to one-shot the final boss of Act 2. Their achievement adds to the already substantial list of Baldur's Gate 3 builds and combos that can deal devastating damage.
Warning! Baldur's Gate 3 Act 2 spoilers ahead.The second act of Baldur's Gate 3 ends with an epic fight against General Ketheric Thorm. The encounter takes place in two stages, the first of which can be skipped by passing a difficult skill check. Once Thorm goes down, he reemerges as the Apostle of Myrkul, a colossal skeleton wielding an aptly gigantic scythe. His final form boasts resistances to a wide variety of damage and can deal out some serious punishment, not least because Thorm tends to start each turn by pulling the party toward him before bombarding it, all the while his Bone-Chill aura prevents the player from healing.
And though this encounter is usually a long and arduous affair, Reddit user GoldenThane recently managed to make short work of the Apostle of Myrkul, having devised a straightforward way to one-shot the final boss of Act 2. The method requires Twist of Fortune, a morningstar obtained by defeating Gerringothe Thorm earlier in Act 2 of Baldur's Gate 3. This mace unlocks a special attack called Blood Money, which deals an extra 3 Piercing damage for each 300 gold in the target's possession. While Thorm doesn't have too much money on his person, GoldenThane decided to enrich him by planting an additional 15,000 gold pieces into his inventory with the Pickpocketing skill during the first stage of the fight.
Once Thorm transformed into the Apostle of Myrkul, the player simply struck him with Blood Money, dealing enough damage to instantly kill the 225 HP boss. Though the bonus effect from Blood Money combined with 15,000 gold only delivered 150 Piercing damage, each of its 50 increments registered as a separate attack, thus triggering its own instance of Cull the Weak. This Baldur's Gate 3 ability deals an additional 1-4 Psychic damage to all nearby enemies once a given creature is brought down to fewer hit points than the attacker's number of evolved Illithid powers. Whether the recurring interaction was intentional on the developer's part or not, it allowed GoldenThane to down the Apostle of Myrkul with a single hit.
This newly shared way of cheesing the final boss fight of the game's second act is far from the first occasion on which players devised clever methods for one-shotting enemies in Larian's hit RPG. Another such example emerged online in mid-August, when one fan demonstrated a Baldur's Gate 3 Owlbear trick for dealing a ridiculous amount of damage.
Baldur's Gate 3 is out now for PC. A PS5 version releases on September 6, and an Xbox Series X/S version is expected to launch in late 2023.
