Highlights

  • Baldur's Gate 3 features returning characters from previous games, but one character missing is Edwin Odesseiron, a Red Wizard of Thay.
  • Hints and information from other Forgotten Realms materials suggest that Edwin may be hiding out in Baldur's Gate 3 under the identity of Lorroakan.
  • There are several hints indicating that Lorroakan might be Edwin in disguise, including his appearance, use of projections, and goals of extending his lifespan. However, there are also indications that Lorroakan is his own character separate from Edwin.

In addition to introducing many new characters, Baldur's Gate 3 is filled with returning favorites from previous games. Allies Minsc and Jaheira join the adventure once more, Viconia and Sarevok are fought as enemies, and many others are referenced in dialogue and in-game text. But one party member from both previous games is noticeably missing: Edwin Odesseiron, an ambitious, egotistical, Red Wizard of Thay. However, some subtle hints and information from other Forgotten Realms materials indicate that Edwin may be hiding out in Baldur's Gate 3 after all.

What Larian Should Include In Baldur's Gate 3's Epilogue Party

Baldur's Gate 3's upcoming, recently announced Epilogue Party should definitely include these fun moments and scenes for players to enjoy.

Edwin Apparently Defeated Lorroakan

Edwin is a power-hungry and confident man, believing himself to be the greatest wizard in Faerun and constantly seeking greater magical strength. He particularly enjoys taking down other wizards, even believing himself strong enough to face Elminster, Faerun's greatest mage. In the Dungeons and Dragons 5th edition book Minsc and Boo's Journal of Villainy, Edwin appears as a Henchman-class villain. He is described as having recently killed a young wizard named Lorroakan, and to be residing in Ramazith's Tower, which Lorroakan once claimed. Although human, Edwin is mentioned as having gained an "elf's lifespan" via his spells.

He has recently taken over Ramazith's Tower and adopted the identity of Lorroakan, the young mage who formerly lived in the tower (now dead by Edwin's hand) -Minsc and Boo's Journal of Villainy

Lorroakan May Be Edwin In Disguise

Baldur's Gate 3 Lorroakan Boss Fight

Despite this information, players can encounter a seemingly living Lorroakan in Baldur's Gate 3. He seeks the Nightsong - actually the aasimar paladin Dame Aylin - in order to steal her power of immortality. Players have a choice between surrendering Aylin to Lorroakan, earning his aid as an ally in the final battle, or killing him, allowing the tiefling wizard Rolan to take over Ramazith's Tower instead.

While there is no official confirmation that the "Lorroakan" players meet is in fact Edwin pretending to be the wizard he previously killed, there are several hints indicating that this might be the case. These include:

Baldurs Gate 3 Nightsong Lorroakan Choice Guide
  • Lorroakan dresses in red and gold, the same colors worn by Edwin in Baldur's Gate 1 and 2
  • While he technically "runs" the shop Sorcerous Sundries, Lorroakan actually uses a projection of himself to interact with others. Using projections instead of doing work himself was a signature move of Edwin's.
  • The treasure vault of Ramazith's Tower contains the key necessary for unlocking the powers of the Necromancy of Thay. Edwin was a Red Wizard of Thay, although he eventually split from them to pursue his own goals.
  • Lorroakan's pompous and self-centered attitude matches Edwin's, especially his inflated sense of self-importance.
  • He is rude and dismissive to Gale, making fun of him for being cast out by Mystra. Edwin was consistently condescending towards all other wizards, always thinking of himself as better than them.
  • One of Lorroakan's goals in Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 was extending his lifespan, as he hated that he was human. Seeking immortality via the Nightsong would help him achieve this goal.

However, there are a few indications that Baldur's Gate 3 ignores Minsc and Boo's Journal of Villainy, and that Lorroakan is himself, not Edwin. Neither Jaheira nor Minsc, both of whom previously traveled with Edwin, notice anything strange about Lorroakan or any potential connections with their former companion. Additionally, there are hints that Edwin is still active in the world - Gale threatens to "go all Edwin Odesseiron on [the player]" should they click on him too many times in combat.

Edwin's mysterious fate and lack of presence in Baldur's Gate 3 has been a point of discussion among fans of the previous two games. It remains to be seen whether the "Edwin is Lorroakan" theory will be confirmed by Larian Studios, or if the sinister but memorable Red Wizard will show up in another context, perhaps in future Baldur's Gate 3 DLC.
